SMITHSONIAN FOLKWAYS RECORDINGS TO RELEASE
'VIVA EL MARIACHI: NATI CANO'S MARIACHI LOS CAMPEROS' ON AUGUST 13
17-TRACK COLLECTION HIGHLIGHTS WORK OF ONE OF MARIACHI MUSIC'S MOST ACCOMPLISHED PRACTITIONERS
On August 13, Smithsonian Folkways Recordings will release 'Viva El Mariachi: Nati Cano's Mariachi Los Camperos,' a look into the traditional mariachi works of the legendary artist. At once a traditionalist and a visionary, Nati Cano has played a major role in shaping mariachi music.
Born in a rural Mexican town in 1933 to a family of mariachi musicians, Cano's goal has always been to bring greater acceptance, understanding, and respect to the Mexican mariachi tradition, and to reach the widest possible audience with his music. At the age of 24, Cano moved to the United States, where he played and was the artistic director of Mariachi Chapala for four years. In 1961, he created Los Camperos - an internationally renowned mariachi group - bringing world-class virtuosity and complex arrangements to the art form.
Eleven of the seventeen tracks on this collection were originally released as the self-produced album 'Sounds of Mariachi: Los Camperos de Nati Cano.' Three others are outtakes from the 1996 recording session for that album, and the remaining three are from recordings for a radio show featuring Los Camperos as part of the series 'Club del Sol.' The collection includes sones, canciones, rancheras, huapangos, and boleros - all cornerstone forms of mariachi music. Cano's Los Camperos show their mastery of all of these styles.
Produced, compiled, and annotated by Smithsonian Folkways Director Daniel Sheehy, 'Viva El Mariachi: Nati Cano's Mariachi Los Camperos' highlights the accomplishments of an artist who remains at the forefront of traditional mariachi music. This project also received support from the Latino Initiatives Fund, administered by the Smithsonian Center for Latino Initiatives.
