Those looking to make use of an iPod they no longer need can help infuse life and memory into elders with Alzheimer's or dementia by donating it to the Broadway Alzheimer's iPod Drive. Donated iPods will go to facilities that care for those suffering from memory disease through a collaboration with Allegro, the official publication of the New York City musicians' union, and Music & Memory, the non-profit "re-awakening" elders with the power of music, highlighted in the buzzed-about fall 2012 documentary 'Alive Inside.'

Founded by Dan Cohen, a Long Island volunteer, social worker and former Department of Education consultant, Music & Memory began in 2008 when Cohen distributed 200 iPods in four New York City facilities and observed that the residents experienced increased socialization and engagement after listening to the songs of their youth. The efforts have spread to more than 50 nursing homes across the US.
"Music & Memory feels like a natural fit for the Broadway community, who can really grasp and appreciate the power of music," Dave Roth, Broadway musician and ambassador for the Alzheimer's Association, said. "There are so many old iPods or music devices sitting around in drawers. When we put just one of those in the hands of someone suffering from Alzheimer's or dementia, it breathes new life into them and really becomes a beautiful cause."
