A Tribe Called Red, a DJ group from Ottawa, Canada, mix bruising electronic music with traditional First Nations pow wow singing, drumming and dancing and a strong political message about the issues and systematic problems that face indigenous people. Made up of producers/DJs Ian “DJ NDN” Campeau, Bear Witness, and Tim “2oolman” Hill, A Tribe Called Red will release their third album ‘We Are The Halluci Nation’ September 16th on Radicalized Records. The 15-track album is an intense, incendiary collection; a visionary blend of electronic and dance music that’s forward-thinking with a deep sense of heritage and cultural identity.

‘We Are The Halluci Nation’ features guests Yasiin Bey (formerly known as Mos Def), Saul Williams, Polaris Prize-winning throat singer Tanya Tagaq, the rapper Shad and many others. Indigenous Canadian artists like Black Bear, Northern Voice and The Chippewa Travellers recorded with A Tribe Called Red and are prominently featured. The album title comes for a series of works that poet and activist John Trudell wrote for the band before his passing away last year. Some of his recitations also appear on the album.

The album opens with the title track, a meditation written and recited by John Trudell and joined by the pow wow drum group Northern Voice. Trudell’s words act as a mission statement; reverence for the earth and a rallying cry to activism. It quickly segues into the scalding “R.E.D.” featuring Yasiin Bey, a bleak beat stacked with synths, shouts and a flurry of percussion.

A Tribe Called Red have performed at Coachella, Gathering of Nations (the world’s largest Pow Wow), New Orleans Jazz Fest, SXSW, Bonnaroo, Afropunk and more. They won the Breakthrough Group of the Year Juno Award 2014 for their second album ‘Nation II Nation,’ and their first two albums were long and short-listed respectively for the Polaris Music Prize. In 2015 the group completed a free tour of several reservations in Ontario, Canada. They’ve collaborated with Angel Haze and Das Racist, and have millions of views and streams on YouTube and Spotify.
