Last night in Paris, Angélique Kidjo’s “Bando” featuring Pharrell Williams and Quavoclosed Louis Vuitton’s Spring-Summer 2027 Men’s Show, presented live at Cité Internationale Universitaire de Paris. The show featured new original music unveiled by Pharrell Williams, Louis Vuitton’s Men’s Creative Director, as part of a cross-genre runway soundscape bringing together fashion, orchestral music, choir, hip-hop, and global sounds. For Angélique, the moment continues a major creative chapter with Pharrell and Louis Vuitton: Pharrell produced three songs on her recent album HOPE!! — including “Bando” — and recently outfitted her in custom Louis Vuitton for the GRAMMY Awards. HOPE!! is the full-length follow-up to Kidjo’s 2021 GRAMMY-winning Mother Nature, and features Pharrell, Quavo, Davido, Ayra Starr, Nile Rodgers, Charlie Wilson, IZA, PJ Morton and more.

American Tunes: Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing Tour with Mavis Staples, Mary Chapin Carpenter and Hurray for the Riff Raff Five-Date Summer Series Begins Tomorrow

June 25, 2026 -- Pulitzer and Grammy-winning artist Rhiannon Giddens has announced that her new album Hope is the Thing with Feathers will be released September 18 on Nonesuch Records. The 10-song collection was inspired by the beauty of people coming together and drawing strength from each other. It was intentionally recorded live with no frills and few overdubs, just pure and essential music that captures the feeling of community, clarity, as well as the joy and power of creating together. From exploring the lineages that make American music to the community-oriented spirit in which it was conceived and recorded, in many ways the album tells the story of the last 20 years of Giddens’ life.

Hope is the Thing with Feathers features Giddens’ key collaborators from throughout her career. Giddens (lead vocals, minstrel banjo, fiddle) is joined by longtime bassist Jason Sypher, Italian multi-instrumentalist Francesco Turrisi (accordion, percussion), Congolese artist Niwel Tsumbu (guitars), and Louisiana native Dirk Powell on multiple instruments, as well as her very first bandmate and fellow North Carolinian Justin Robinson (vocals, fiddle), her nephew Justin Harrington (bones), Dirk’s daughter Amelia Powell (acoustic guitar, vocals), Charly Lowry (vocals, percussion), and Giddens’ sister Lalenja Harrington.

Says Giddens: “Louisiana, the Congo, Italy, the Carolinas - all of these influences and people coming together to make something: that is American music. It’s how American music came to be, and that was the original thought of creating a band with the musicians that I’ve been playing with for years, and featured on this album.”   

Giddens’ seventh studio album was made in sessions nestled within North American tours in 2024 and 2025, at The Cypress House in Breaux Bridge, Louisiana. It was co-produced by Giddens and longtime collaborator and bandmate Dirk Powell, who also engineered and mixed the album. Recording live was crucial, to bring the listener into the center of the room. Giddens says that she cannot play without stomping, which can be felt on the opening track. Background noise and the sound of the musicians talking to each other before takes were also intentionally left in. 

Hope is the Thing with Feathers includes four original songs written by Giddens and Powell, including lead single “Carolina Rain.” Giddens soars over plucked banjo and fiddle runs in a song about love and money that pierces like an arrow. “Wish in Vain” was written about the refugee crisis around the globe, “trying to imagine being torn from all you know and how those you love never really leave you,” she says. 

The album also features interpretations of pieces by North Carolinians Ola Belle Reed (“High on a Mountain”) and Elizabeth Cotton (“Freight Train”), Indigenous activist, singer-songwriter and storyteller Pura Fé (“Going Home”), and traditionals including “Cluck Old Hen” and “Walk with Me” (a duet with Giddens’ sister). The title track was inspired by the poem by Emily Dickinson. Says Giddens: “This is most certainly a time where hope is needed more than ever; I was sitting in a hotel room pondering this poem when the tune was downloaded into my brain; I sang it for Niwel and he finished it with his beautiful harmonic movement. Art reaches across generations and continents to be completed, sometimes, by folks who will never meet.” The album cover is a six-by-six-foot patchwork quilt made by textile artist Uzoma Samuel Anyanwu, based on a photograph of Giddens by Ebru Yildiz.  

Ever-prolific, Giddens continues to reach new heights as a multi-disciplinary artist. She plays the lead in forthcoming film An Ode To Mary Jo, alongside Ed Helms, Jason Isbell, Steve Earle, Regina Taylor and John Sayles; she served as a music supervisor and consultant, and contributed original music to the history-making film Sinners; and contributed new music for Revolutionary War: A Ken Burns Documentary for PBS. Recent projects include the Color Me Country coloring book for the Color Me Country Foundation, and Go Back and Fetch It: Recovering Early Black Music in the Americas for Fiddle and Banjo, co-authored with music writer Kristina R. Gaddy. The book presents examples of early Black Atlantic music from the 1600s through the 1800s, restoring the roots of Black music to the musical canon. Genuine Negro Jig, the debut album by the Carolina Chocolate Drops, was reissued by Nonesuch earlier this year, and 2025’s What Did the Blackbird Say to the Crow with Justin Robinson earned a GRAMMY nomination for Best Folk Album.  

Recent performances and appearances include a sold-out Carnegie Hall, and PBS’ Finding Your Roots TV series with Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Jr. Her work with Silkroad Ensemble continues throughout this year with Sanctuary: The Power of Resonance and Ritual. Giddens also just launched the Biscuits & Banjos Foundation, a nonprofit that celebrates the African diaspora’s role in shaping American identity and culture through music, literature, food, and community. As an initial initiative, the Foundation will provide Black music education organizations with banjos, expanding access to instruments and supporting the next generation of players and tradition-bearers. The Foundation was born out of Giddens’ Biscuits & Banjos Festival, a sold-out three-day event of music and community across Durham, N.C.

Today (June 25), Joy Division announce Eternal (Live), their first-ever official collection of live concert recordings, available to pre-order now via Warner Music. Years in the making, this landmark release from one of the most seminal bands of our time, brings together audio from 16 live performances across 14CDs, meticulously sourced from audience recorded cassettes, soundboard tapes and broadcast recordings, all mastered at Abbey Road Studios.

Eternal (Live) documents some of Joy Division’s most significant live performances of their career, including two previously unreleased shows, Hope & Anchor and Acklam Hall, and three previously unheard recordings, The Factory, Lyceum, Moonlight Club (April 2). It also features the band’s final live performance, at High Hall Birmingham in 1980, where they played Ceremony for the first and last time on stage.  

There are two DVDs featuring over 2 hours 30 minutes of live shows, including the previously unseen Plan K, Brussels concert and two concerts and soundcheck from the Apollo Theatre, Manchester that have only been partially released on VHS (in 1982) and a brand new edit of Joy Division - A Malcolm Whitehead Film.

Housed in a 12" x 12" lift-off lid box with artwork by Warren Jackson, Peter Saville, Howard Wakefield and Brett Wickens, the cover photography is Sirius Through a Defocused Telescope, 2023 by Wolfgang Tillmans. Eternal (Live) is completed by a 16 page booklet, including personal notes by Simon Armitage and photography by, amongst others, Anton Corbijn and Kevin Cummins. 

A special exhibit honoring the late Ian Curtis is opening at Voltz Clarke Gallery in NYC today, June 25, and is open through July 22. “Ian Curtis: Insight” presents an intimate and revealing selection of handwritten lyrics, photographs, personal letters, ephemera and artifacts drawn from the Ian Curtis archive, held by The John Rylands Library at The University of Manchester as part of the British Pop Archive. Los Angeles, CA (June 24, 2026) – Craft Recordings’ Original Jazz Classics (OJC) series returns with a pair of seminal releases from two jazz icons. Continuing the year-long celebration of the centennials of Miles Davis and John Coltrane, OJC will reissue The Miles Davis Quintet’s Cookin’ with the Miles Davis Quintet and John Coltrane’s Coltrane on August 14.

Originally released on Prestige in 1957, both albums capture pivotal moments in the careers of two of jazz’s most influential artists. These new editions feature all-analog (AAA) mastering from the original tapes by Cohearent Audio, 180-gram vinyl pressed at RTI, and Stoughton Tip-On jackets with obi strips. Both are available for pre-order today and will also be released digitally in 192/24 hi-res audio.

The quintet — which also featured John Coltrane (tenor sax), Red Garland (piano), Paul Chambers (bass), and Philly Joe Jones (drums) — stands among the most celebrated groups in jazz history. Music critic Ralph Gleason, a founding editor of Rolling Stone magazine and co-founder of the Monterey Jazz Festival, once gushed, “The intricacy of the linkage between the minds of these musicians has never been equaled in any group, in my opinion.” Cookin’ is one of the four albums to emerge from the Quintet’s legendary 1956 sessions at the storied Van Gelder Studio. 

Recorded without rehearsals and in a single take, the fittingly titled Cookin’ features Davis at a pivotal moment in his artistic evolution, unleashing the full dynamic range of his trumpet. As All About Jazz observed, “He plays his ass off… ranging high and low with Olympian poise and, at times, unprecedented ferocity.”

To that end, you’d be hard-pressed to find any lull on this unforgettable album, which proffers four superlative tracks. Cookin’ is a dexterous yet unflappable revelation, beginning with the silky, levitating “My Funny Valentine,” and closing with the swinging “Tune Up/When Lights Are Low.” “Without a doubt, a highlight not only of this mammoth session, but also the entire tenure of Miles Davis’ mid-’50s quintet,” AllMusic raved. “All the elements converge upon this fundamentally swinging medley.” As any collector will attest: If ever an album were a keeper, it’s this one.

John Coltrane – Coltrane

Coltrane recorded this, his first solo LP, in 1957 at Van Gelder’s Studio — a year after the saxophonist contributed to the Miles Davis Quintet’s exceptional Cookin’. By the end of that same year, Coltrane would join the Thelonious Monk Quartet.

But first, he released Coltrane. Highlights include the rousing bop offering “Straight Street” and the virtuosic, escapist “Chronic Blues.” Most of the tracks, starting with “Bakai” (which dances with discord before giving way to effortless groove), are breathless and cerebral — a testament to Coltrane’s vibrant vision, matched by his formidable technical prowess. “This is a very fine record, one of the best of the year, for experienced jazz fans,” the San Francisco Chronicle declared, before adding, with a bit of snark: “It is not recommended for those who want pretty sounds.” Other tracks, including “While My Lady Sleeps,” offer a velvety counterpoint to the album’s more adventurous moments.

Joining Coltrane here are Johnnie Splawn (trumpet), Sahib Shihab (sax), Red Garland (piano), Mal Waldron (piano), Paul Chambers (bass), and Albert “Tootie” Heath (drums), all of whom help level up and counterbalance the album’s flirtations with melody and confrontation. “[Coltrane] is a player in what is over-loosely termed the ‘hard’ school of modern jazz in that he plays with fierce, propulsive urgency, possessing a tone and attack that is bluntly direct,” HiFi Stereo observes. “Harmonically, he is consistently adventurous, and in overall conception, he has become unusually absorbing.”

June 24, 2026 – Live Music Society (LMS) has announced the 29 small performance venue recipients of the 2026 Music in Action grant. This year’s grantees will collectively receive $844,000 in funding to support programs that strengthen community connections, expand access to live music, nurture emerging artists, and improve the concert experience for audiences, artists, and staff at each venue. With this latest round of funding, LMS has now distributed nearly $6 million in grants to 250 independent venues nationwide since its founding in 2020. The program is designed to empower spaces where musicians, fans, and entire communities can thrive, while providing essential support for projects that promote sustainable growth, strengthen local cultural infrastructure, and amplify historically underrepresented voices. 

Now in its fourth year, the Music in Action grant program continues to support venue-led projects that demonstrate creativity, community relevance, inclusivity, and lasting impact. The 2026 grantees represent 19 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico, reflecting the breadth and diversity of the nation's independent venue ecosystem. From artist residencies and mentorship programs to festivals, educational initiatives, audience development campaigns, and accessibility-focused programming, this year’s projects showcase how small venues are building stronger communities through live music.

This year’s Music in Action grantees are exploring innovative ways to connect live music with community wellbeing. Caffè Lena in Saratoga Springs, New York will launch a Prescription Ticket Pilot, partnering with healthcare providers, social workers, and therapists to offer patients access to concerts and community experiences that support social connection and mental wellness. In New Orleans, Preservation Hall will expand its Kids Iin Tthe Hall field trip program, providing more students with hands-on musical experiences and direct exposure to one of the country's most iconic music institutions.

Community-centered programming is also a hallmark of this year's cohort. Trans-Pecos in Ridgewood, New York City will present Sound Summit, a series of day-long events built around specific musical styles that bring together musicians, visual artists, local vendors, and audiences. In San Francisco, The Riptide will launch Tidefest, a community music festival spotlighting local, emerging, BIPOC, and LGBTQ+ artists. Meanwhile, Drytown Social Club in rural Drytown, California will expand cultural programming through Ritmos y Raíces, a Latin music series designed to connect new audiences with live music while celebrating regional and cultural traditions.

In conjunction with this year's Music in Action announcement, Live Music Society has released the eighth episode of its American Road Trip video series. The new episode spotlights two Los Angeles jazz institutions and 2025 Music in Action grantees, Sam Firstand The World Stage Performance Gallery, exploring their roles in supporting artists and building community through live music. In addition to its grantmaking programs, Live Music Society continues to expand its support for the independent venue ecosystem through One Night Live, the touring collaboration it launched in 2025 with D-Tour and Salt Lick Incubator. Created in response to the economic challenges facing emerging artists and independent venues, One Night Live helps create more sustainable touring opportunities by combining artist-development partnerships, direct financial support, and community-focused performances at independent venues.

The initiative has grown rapidly since its launch, supporting five tours in just 15 months and building partnerships with organizations including D-Tour, Salt Lick Incubator, Midtopia, Cleveland Rocks: Past, Present & Future, and Folk Alliance International. Participating venues receive support to help offset marketing and production costs while artists benefit from expanded touring opportunities and stronger connections with local communities.

Several current and former Live Music Society grantees have participated in One Night Live tours, reflecting the organization's broader commitment to strengthening every part of the independent live music ecosystem, from venue sustainability and audience development to artist discovery and career growth. Live Music Society plans to continue expanding the initiative in the coming year and most recently announced a summer tour with Salt Lick Incubator artist Frail Talk.

June 24, 2026: Nearly ninety years after legendary bandleader Tommy Dorsey abandoned an ambitious new symphonic work deemed too difficult for its time, trombone virtuoso Jim Pugh has finally brought the music to life. Arriving August 14, New American Symphonies unites Pugh with Grammy Award-winning engineer and producer Jim Anderson and acclaimed producer Ulrike Schwarz for the first-ever recording of Roy Harris's long-lost trombone symphony, originally written for Dorsey in 1938. Captured in stunning Digital eXtreme Definition (DXD) and immersive audio at Power Station at BerkleeNYC, the album pairs the rediscovered Harris composition with Night Suite, a contemporary multi-movement work written specifically for Pugh by composer Scott Ninmer.

Bringing the piece to life required far more than a recording session. The project began with a years-long research effort that eventually led Pugh to the Library of Congress, where he uncovered Harris's original manuscripts spread across several boxes of archival materials. There, he learned that Dorsey's orchestra had rehearsed part of the work only once before abandoning it and that the music was never publicly performed.

"It's really a magnificent piece of music," says Pugh. "If you close your eyes and listen to the first movement, you can hear where jazz would eventually arrive some 35 or 40 years later, and if you pay attention to the back end, you can hear the roots of minimalism. It's this remarkable little time capsule that slipped through the cracks of history."

The recording revives a work by Roy Harris, best known for his Symphony No. 3, that remained unheard for nearly nine decades despite being written for one of the biggest stars of the Swing Era. For Pugh, whose career spans more than 4,000 recording sessions with artists including Steely Dan, Yo-Yo Ma, Paul Simon, Barbra Streisand, Michael Jackson, Pink Floyd, Tony Bennett, and Frank Sinatra, the project represents both a musical excavation and a deeply personal collaboration. The album reunites him with Jim Anderson, whom he first met in a Pennsylvania school band more than sixty years ago.

While Pugh went on to become one of the most sought-after trombonists in contemporary music, Anderson emerged as one of the world's leading audio engineers and producers, earning more than 30 Grammy nominations alongside his wife and longtime production partner, Ulrike Schwarz.

Recorded live with an all-star ensemble featuring musicians drawn from the worlds of jazz, classical music, Broadway, and studio recording, New American Symphonies reflects a shared commitment to artistic excellence and sonic innovation.

"If we can make the technology disappear, if our presence can be totally transparent, then we've done our job," says Anderson. "Sure, we're always trying to push the envelope, but ultimately our goal is to make timeless recordings with nothing standing between the listener and the musical experience." That philosophy is realized throughout the album's immersive production: "When you listen to this record, you'll feel like you're standing in the middle of the band, but also like they're playing directly to you," adds Schwarz. "It's a completely immersive experience."

Complementing Harris's rediscovered work is Scott Ninmer's Night Suite, composed specifically for Pugh by his former student who has since become Chief Arranger for The United States Marine Band in Washington, D.C.. Together, the two compositions create a sweeping portrait of American music spanning nearly a century, linking the symphonic ambitions of the 1930s to the creative voices of today.

The result is an album that bridges generations, genres, and technologies, honoring America's musical past and pointing toward its future. The release will be celebrated with a special album event to follow on September 15 at Technica House in New York City.

Tuesday, June 23 - This Sunday, the Hudson River Music Festival took over Croton Point Park on Father’s Day for a full day of live music, family activities, celebration and outdoor fun. Presented by Harper House Music Foundation, Riverfest FPS (For Pete’s Sake), and Dayglo and rooted in the spirit of Toshi and Pete Seeger’s folk picnics, the festival returned for a second year to bring together music lovers, environmental advocates, and families for a vibrant celebration. The all-ages festival united people in a gathering fueled by a shared love for the river, music, and activism. From the musical performances to community-driven experiences, the festival continues to carry the torch of a beloved tradition in the Hudson Valley area. 

Mainstage headliner and folk musician and four-time Grammy nominee Jesse Welles performed a moving tribute to Pete Seeger on the Hudson Stage to close out the festival by singing “This Land is Your Land”. Other headliners included genre defying “Cosmic Country” artist Daniel Donato, Allman Brothers band member Warren Haynes, Margo Price, and Grahame Lesh. Modeled after Seeger’s original vision, the festival brought together a new wave of folk and Americana voices carrying that mission forward and using their platforms to reflect and shape the evolving American story.

The Rainbow Stage hosted staple Americana acts carrying forward a rich family folk tradition and celebrating musical heritage and community. Attendees could catch sets from Tom Chapin & The Chapin Sisters or the Gutherie Family Singers. Composer and multi-instrumentalist David Amram, whose career spans decades of American music history, performed, as did Damaris Bojor, a rising star in the Mexican music scene and creator of the innovative new genre “Folkpirano.” Leah Song, American singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, storyteller, poet, and activist, known as one of the frontwomen of Rising Appalachia, shared a touching performance before The Ebony Hillbillies brought their unique African-American string band tradition.

The North Star Stage served as a cultural hub focused on activities and family fun. Young music fans rocked out with The Rock and Roll Playhouse, Bash The Trash, and Yoga sessions! Families were able to get creative in the Kids & Family Arts & Crafts Area, and join the participatory Circle of Song. Roaming performances from Arm of the Sea, a whimsical Fish Migration with puppets and puppeteers from the Jim Henson Studios, New Vaudevillain (stilts and magic), and Nate the Great (music and juggling) popped up throughout the day. The North Field transformed into a hub for advocacy, education, and action as well hosting a curated selection of community environmental organizations, grassroots activist groups, and a high-level panel on Climate Change. From hands-on creativity to river-inspired spectacle, the festival offered a vibrant, multi-generational celebration.

Committed to an inclusive experience for all guests, the festival offered ADA parking, accessible shuttles (including to Croton-Harmon Train Station), and accessible viewing areas at both stages, including an elevated platform on the main stage. ASL interpreters signed alongside all Hudson Stage and Rainbow Stage performances, with dedicated viewing from the Deaf Zone.

• Grammy nominated Cuban artist Cimafunk brought festival-goers onto the Hudson stage to dance with him as he closed out his high-energy set in the afternoon
• The Riverkeeper Fish Migration Celebration walked across the festival grounds, weaving between activist tents, food vendors, and festival stages. The annual parade blends arts and community engagement to protect the Hudson river and life.
• After a brief rain interlude in the afternoon, a rainbow emerged to shine down on the festival - an important fixture to Pete Seeger and his legacy.
• Grahame Lesh shared opening remarks on the festivals’ first ever Climate Change Panel. The last musical artist to participate in an environmental cause panel during the festival was during Pete Seeger’s tenure.
• The festival was made possible by the dedication and hard work of 150volunteers. From managing shifts and assisting with accessibility to educating attendees about composting and creating moments of joy for families, these volunteers brought Pete Seeger’s vision of community to life. 
• Families flocked to the North Star Stage where The Rock and Roll Playhouse and Bash the Trash hosted two performances. Kids danced to live music of The Beatles and the Grateful Dead in addition to listening to live music from instruments made from repurposed materials.
• During Daniel Donato, Grahame Lesh, and Warren Haynes’ set Margo Price and Jesse Welles made a special appearance with the trio on stage to perform Pete Seeger’s “If I Had a Hammer” as a beautiful tribute to the festival’s origins.
• Headliner Jesse Welles’ closed out the evening with a moving rendition of “This Land is Your Land” alongside fellow musicians Grahame Lesh, Sarah Lee Guthrie, Serena Guthrie, Robin Irion, Daniel Donato, Warren Haynes, Rik Palieri, Margo Price, and more.

The station reached more than 705,000 listeners during the ratings period, surpassing major public radio outlets including WNYC in New York (693,000 listeners) and KQED in San Francisco (645,000 listeners).

Meanwhile, Classical California’s Bay Area station (formerly known as KDFC) tied for fifth place among all radio stations in the San Francisco market.

The ratings milestone follows the creation of Classical California, a unified statewide classical music network serving audiences across California and beyond. Tuesday, June 23 – Today, CBGB & OMFUG – Home of Underground Rock and The Bowery Presents reveals the stage lineups for CBGB Festival on Saturday, September 26 at Under the K Bridge Park in Brooklyn, NY. The CBGB Stage will feature Morrissey and Patti Smith, NYC’s own Interpol, Sex Pistols (Steve Jones, Paul Cook, Glen Matlock) ft. Frank Carter, Bikini Kill and beyond, while the Marshall Presents Hilly’s Stage lineup includes Mannequin Pussy, Circle Jerks, Sleater-Kinney and Fred Armisen’s Ramones tribute band The Return of Jackie & Judy, Violet Grohl and more.
