At age 19, the South African artist came out to his fundamentalist Christian church and Xhosa family, only to spend the next six years surrendering to the false belief he could pray away his "sinful" sexuality. Now abandoning his religion to embrace his identity with experimental soul, electronic art pop and queer anti-gospel, Nakhane’s US debut captures a heroic voice and an international icon in the making.
