A COLLISION OF CULTURES IN A TRIBE CALLED RED'S "INDIAN CITY" VIDEO - WATCH VIA THE FADER: http://bit.ly/2lHNEiN
MARCH US TOUR ANNOUNCED INCLUDES NYC, PHILLY, DC + BOSTON AND MORE/ "CRITICAL LISTENING FOR EVERYONE" - PITCHFORK, 8.1Electronic pow wow producer trio A Tribe Called Red has unveiled a new music video for their song “Indian City” (featuring First Nations drum group Black Bear) via The Fader. The pulsing, immediate, pummeling song from their recently released ‘We Are The Halluci Nation’ finds a group of traditional First Nations and hip hop-inspired dancers in a dance battle in a city square in Toronto. The traditional dancers showcase a variety of regalia and dance styles from the indigenous peoples of North America and the dancing depicts how the styles have influenced one another.
The video is a visual representation of A Tribe Called Red’s distinct style that fuses traditional First Nations music and dance with hip hop and electronic music. Their new album was deemed the best album of 2016 by the CBC in Canada and A Tribe Called Red return to the U.S. for a run of shows in March that includes NYC, D.C., Boston and Philadelphia. “Like many movements, the Halluci Nation grew from a place of necessity. Long before we fought in the streets, our first battles were fought on the dance floor. Some of us have learned about our culture from birth, being taught to sing, drum and dance like we were being shown to speak and walk. Some of us have found our way first through beats, breaking and turntablism, only to find it leading us back to our roots. The movement carries memories and the drums are kept deep in our chests, no matter how hard they tried to rip them out. So, we learned to dance on these city streets and write our songs on digital drums.” - Oral History of the Halluci Nation
‘We Are The Halluci Nation’ was released to raves, and featured in Pitchfork, NPR, Time, Mic.com, Huffington Post, The Fader, Vice and much more. The album features Yasiin Bey, Tanya Tagaq, John Trudell and Saul Williams, and represents a crucial voice for indigenous people across the globe with A Tribe Called Red’s forward thinking vision while maintaining a deep sense of heritage and cultural identity. The album was released on their own imprint Radicalized Records in the US and on Pirates Blend in Canada.
