A Tribe Called Red And Tanya Tagaq Unveil "Sila" Collaboration
'We Are The Halluci Nation' Out Sept 16First Nations electronic pow wow DJ trio A Tribe Called Red have unveiled "Sila," featuring Tanya Tagaq, the Polaris prize-winning Canadian throat singer. The track is from A Tribe Called Red's third album, 'We Are The Halluci Nation,' coming out Sept 16 on Radicalized Records/Pirates Blend. "Sila" is driven by an icy, minimal beat, jabs of synth and Tagaq's breathtaking form of traditional Inuit throat singing. A Tribe Called Red has already shared two songs from the album: "We Are The Halluci Nation" with poet John Trudell, and "R.E.D.," a fiery track with Yasiin Bey (fka Mos Def) and Iraqi-Canadian MC Narcy.

From the Halluci Nation: We are the Halucia Nation. We are children of Earth and Sky. Our DNA is of land and air. We asked our sister Tanya Tagaq, leader of the norther contingency of our nation, to help us in honoring the part of us that is sky, air, atmosphere. The part of our dna that is Sila. Her gift of breath reminds us of life and reminds us though the simple act of breathing that we are human beings. Tanya helps us see that it is time to rise up and remind each other who we really are. We are the human beings and being human has power.
From Tanya Tagaq: Sila is what you breathe. ATCR has been breaking down doors and building new boundaries for years. They are driving a monster truck of music and they let me on for a ride. Qujannamik!
From A Tribe Called Red: For "Sila," it was special for us to work with our dear friend Tanya. For this song it was a true back-and-forth collaboration (not unlike like the traditional throat singing game), where we sent Tanya a beat that she recorded over. Then we took just her vocals and made a whole new track around her throat singing. "Sila" doesn't translate to English but can be substituted with "air", "atmosphere" or “sky."
'We Are The Halluci Nation' is a visionary blend of electronic and dance music that's forward-thinking with a deep sense of heritage and cultural identity. The album also includes appearances from Saul Williams, Polaris Prize-winning throat singer Tanya Tagaq, the rapper Shad, John Trudell, Northern Voice, The Chippewa Travellers, and more.
A Tribe Called Red have performed at Coachella, Gathering of Nations (the world's largest Pow Wow), New Orleans Jazz Fest, SXSW, Bonnaroo, Afropunk and more. They won the Breakthrough Group of the Year Juno Award 2014 for their second album 'Nation II Nation,' and their first two albums were long and short-listed respectively for the Polaris Music Prize. In 2015 the group completed a free tour of several reservations in Ontario, Canada. They've collaborated with Angel Haze and Das Racist, and have millions of views and streams on YouTube and Spotify.
