This Friday, June 27th, Adrian Quesada will release his new album, Boleros Psicodélicos II, and today he shares its final preview. Out now via ATO Records, "Afuera" features vocals from Ed Maverick, the Chihuahua lo-fi troubadour turned global superstar with billions of streams, pairing spacey desert-inspired soundscapes with a deeply-pocketed, hard-hitting groove. Following his recent singles with Cuco and Angélica Garcia, and a millions-streamed collaboration with Hermanos Gutiérrez, "Afuera" nods to both Adrian Quesada's hip-hop and Latin influences, further showing why the GRAMMY-winning, OSCAR-nominated producer and guitarist is "a sonic alchemist of unparalleled vision" (Billboard).
"I flew to the magical Chihuahuan desert in late 2023 to work with the amazing Ed Maverick," says Adrian Quesada. "We cooked up a few ideas in the studio over the course of two days. I didn't know whether this would be for Boleros Psicodélicos II or for something else, and I didn't want to restrict us to a formula, but it was just left-field enough where I knew it had to make this album. Ed is a rare talent and I have no doubt this desert environment influenced what you hear in the song."

Joined by a long list of artists, friends and Latin alternative visionaries, Boleros Psicodélicos II deepens Adrian Quesada's decades-long mission to celebrate, preserve and reimagine the eccentric and unsung style of balada music that first emerged in the late 1960s and early 1970s, but has influenced Quesada and countless others for decades. As the sequel to 2022's beloved Boleros Psicodélicos, Boleros Psicodélicos II combines brand new, original music, with reimagined renditions of classic boleros, as it exemplifies the ways in which he has "raised the bar for Latin alternative artistry" (Los Angeles Times). Says NPR's Alt.Latino, Adrian Quesada is "a wizard of just finding the magical little sauce of each artist, and bringing it to the fore."
Produced by Adrian Quesada and Alex Goose (Aaron Frazer, Childish Gambino), with additional appearances from Chilean singer and songwriter Gepe, Cuban singer Daymé Arocena, Colombian gypsy-jazz combo Monsieur Periné, Puerto Rican vocalist and former Calle 13 member iLe and more, Boleros Psicodélicos II could "serve as an introductory who's who of still-practising voices in this idiom," raves MOJO, in a four-star review, "which has so much colour, passion and melodrama to enjoy...taut beats, woozy synths and cross-processed orchestration provide a contemporary-feeling backdrop for fabulously theatrical performances."
Following a spring tour with Hermanos Gutiérrez – which brought him and his Trio Asesino to Miami Beach's Fillmore, Austin's ACL Live, Los Angeles' Greek Theatre and more – Adrian Quesada is now preparing for his first run of Boleros Psicodélicosperformances in three years. Accompanied by Natalia Clavier, Angélica Garcia, iLe, Gaby Moreno, Mireya Ramos, Trish Toledo and an all-star band, stops include Los Angeles' Grand Performances, Pioneertown's Pappy & Harriet's, Austin's Antone's, Brooklyn's Celebrate Brooklyn, DC's Pearl Street Warehouse and Puyallup's Washington State Fair this August and September. Sets will feature the music of both Boleros Psicodélicos and Boleros Psicodélicos II, and tickets are now available atadrianquesada.net/tour.
Before then, Adrian Quesada will celebrate the release of Boleros Psicodélicos II this Friday, June 27th, at Tonal in Mexico City, alongside Alex Goose, Trish Toledo, Joshy Soul and Toy Selectah.
