Angelique Kidjo To Open For Vampire Weekend At Madison Square Garden September 6

Curating Prestigious 4-Concert ‘Perspectives’ Program At Carnegie Hall That Runs From October-March

A whirlwind 2019 for Angelique Kidjo continues as she prepares to open for Vampire Weekend at Madison Square Garden on September 6. It is the latest appearance in a triumphant run for Kidjo, who just recently released Celia, an afro-beat spiked tribute to Celia Cruz, the queen of salsa. Celia has been deemed one of the best albums of 2019 by NPR, a Bomba Estereo remix was just released, and she’s been criss-crossing the globe on an epic tour.

Kidjo also just performed a show-stopping set for BBC Proms at Royal Albert Hall in London to raves, and was broadcast on the BBC over the weekend. The London Times said it was “the most electrifying world music Prom in at least a decade” and it received 5 Stars from the Evening Standard.

Last year Kidjo’s celebrated re-imagining of Talking Heads’ Remain In Light (featuring Ezra from Vampire Weekend, Questlove, Alicia Keys, Blood Orange and others), was released and she’s been performing it live across the globe as well, headlining key festivals and concert halls. She recently sat down with David Byrne to talk about music, art and life (and Celia and Remain In Light), read the piece via Cultured Magazine.

On September 25 from 7-9:30, Kidjo will also be hosting a benefit for her Batonga Foundation at the Standard East Village, in Manhattan. The event will feature a live performance and a meal prepared by Kidjo of her favorite Beninese dishes. Tickets are available through the Batonga Foundation, which empowers and educates young women in sub-Saharan Africa.

In a prestigious honor, Kidjo has also been selected to curate four distinct concerts at Carnegie Hall, as part of their Perspectives series. The four events will take place between this October and March of next year and charts the journey of African music and culture throughout the world. Perspectives will culminate with a concert on March 14 to mark her 60th birthday and the anniversary of independence for many West African countries. "She belts with enough grit to rival Cruz herself" -The New York Times

"Best Albums Of 2019 (So Far)” -NPR

“Kidjo's reinterpretations rearrange the molecules of songs that many of us know by heart. The results are glorious…Celia Cruz's music and her entire being was a reminder of the presence of Africa in Cuba. Angélique Kidjo's Celia musically closes that circle with reverence and more than a little love” -NPR First Listen

"Since Cruz’s roots were in Nigerian Yoruba culture, Kidjo’s version acts as a kind of musical homecoming" -WNYC

Album of the Month -The Guardian, 4 stars

"Kidjo succeeds on Celia because she not only pays revelatory tribute to a prime influence, but channels that very spirit of inspiration to deliver a high-water mark in her catalog" -AllMusic

"A delightful dervish of a recording… blazes from start to finish” -Downbeat, 4.5 stars
