Angie McMahon has been named the recipient of South By Southwest’s prestigious Grulke Prize for developing international artist, attributed to “breaking new ground with her creativity and showing the most promise in achieving her career goals” at this year’s festival. Honorees in the Developing Act categories (given annually to one U.S.-based artist and one international artist) over the past few years include Anderson .Paak, Leon Bridges, Courtney Barnett, CHVRCHES and Haim. The prize comes on the heels of Angie’s electrifying seven shows in six days at SXSW 2019, including her performance at Willie Nelson’s Luck Reunion, deemed the “breakout set” of the day by the Austin Chronicle. 

“I’m honoured to be the recipient of the Grulke Prize. I’m so grateful to the incredible team we work with, we heard the news together and we got to celebrate in Austin. It was a special moment," said Angie. 

It’s been an extraordinary month for the Melbourne-based songwriter, who released her Dualtone Records debut EP A Couple of Songs just prior to the Austin trip. The collection was called “a perfect showcase of McMahon's gifts as a songwriter and vocalist” by The FADER, with Consequence of Sound adding that “clearly, big things are happening for the young talent, and you can hear why.” NPR Music also named McMahon to their Austin 100 SXSW list with comparisons to St. Vincent, Fiona Apple and a “one-woman Fleetwood Mac.” Other highlights for McMahon on this U.S. trip include opening for The Pixies, selling out Nashville’s The Basement and her LA debut at Hotel Cafe tomorrow night (March 19, 8PM).

McMahon’s remarkable U.S. run and the Grulke Prize win follow a whirlwind 2018 which saw Angie release her debut single, rack up over 15 million Spotify streams, top the triple j radio charts, sell out 1,500+ capacity rooms in Australia and open for Father John Misty, The Shins and Alanis Morissette. She’ll return with her debut album Salt on Dualtone later this year, and more to-be-announced U.S. dates soon.
