Art Students League Announces ChaShaMa Partnership

In a new partnership, the Art Students League of New York and ChaShaMa join forces to initiate artistic activations in vacant retail spaces across the five boroughs. These presentations will celebrate global stories by emerging artists at the Art Students League while repurposing unused city real estate.

“In the wake of this global health crisis our two veteran arts organizations will come together to heal communities,” says Genevieve Martin, Director of External Affairs at the League. “We lament the inevitable closure of small business in the coming weeks and months, which will serve as a constant reminder of this pandemic. Arts and culture will be looked to in the instigation of city-wide recovery as we open up, and we can begin to fill those voids with art and strive towards revitalization together.” 

The inaugural exhibition will open on September 1 at One Brooklyn Bridge Park, a waterfront gallery at the rear of 360 Furman Street, between Piers 5 + 6 in Brooklyn.

One Brooklyn Bridge Park will host a group show of League student artworks, selected by a reviewing committee of League instructors and organized by Exhibition Outreach Coordinator, Allison Green. In addition to a series of exhibitions, ChaShaMa will extend its Space to Connect initiative working with League artists to extend high-quality artistic programming to underserved communities in all boroughs at no cost. 

Anita Durst, ChaShaMa's founder and Artistic Director, believes that "ChaShaMa and ASL are the perfect partners to enliven NYC" and that "creativity, art, and expression are a matter of community well-being."
