Barbershop Harmony Society Mid-Winter Convention Set for San Antonio, Jan. 17-22, 2017
Convention diversifies, extends invitations to women's choruses and male/female ensemblesContinuing the longstanding American musical tradition, Barbershop Harmony Society will host the annual Mid-Winter Convention Jan. 17-22, 2017. This year, the event is slated for San Antonio and will include youth choruses, senior quartets, women's and men's mixed harmony ensembles, beginners, world champions, educational classes, competitions and spectacular shows -- all brining together more than 1,5000 harmonizers along the Riverwalk.
Additionally, the Society continues their focus on education by supporting the more than 20 youth choruses will attend the international Youth Barbershop Chorus Festival on Fri., Jan. 20.
"Breakthrough acts like Pentatonix, Home Free from The Sing-Off, and the hit Pitch Perfect movies have brought a cappella into the mainstream," Barbershop Harmony Society Outreach Director Joe Cerutti says. "Young singers have found that barbershop harmony gives them a unique musical identity that is exciting and relevant, and they connect to this great harmony tradition stretching back to the turn of the 20th century."
This year's convention spans diversity and extends invitations to women's choruses and mixed ensembles, further supporting music educators and building acapella programs.
The Seniors Quartet Contest will take place on Sat., Jan. 21, and is open to singers over age 55. An exhibition Seniors Chorus Festival is also scheduled. For more on Mid-Winter and a link to the full list of events, please visit barbershop.org/sanantonio.
