Toronto’s famed multi-platinum foursome Barenaked Ladies are hitting the road this summer with “Last Summer on Earth,” a 36-date North American tour with Gin Blossoms and Toad the Wet Sprocket. Starting in St. Augustine, Florida on June 3, the tour had been rescheduled due to the pandemic and gives BNL the opportunity to showcase its 16th studio album Detour de Force, released in July 2021. The tour wraps up in the band’s hometown of Toronto on July 21.
“What a pleasure it is to be getting back to live music” stated lead singer Ed Roberston. “We’re so grateful to everybody who’s stuck with this tour being rescheduled multiple times. We can’t wait to get out and play for you! We’re ready to rock…and we suspect you are too!”
"We Barenaked Ladies are really looking forward to rocking out with our friends Gin Blossoms and Toad the Wet Sprocket on the Last Summer on Earth Tour 2022,” added drummer Tyler Stewart. “Don’t miss it, we can’t wait to see y'all out there dancing, singing and partying again. Let’s go Summer, get here quick!!”
This will be the 6th edition of the tour, founded by the band in 2012 – the year that the Mayan calendar predicted would be the last, hence the “Last Summer On Earth”. Barenaked Ladies headline and bring some of their best friends and favorite bands along for a summer of good times, and of course, great music. Past acts include Cracker, Big Head Todd & the Monsters, Blues Traveler, Guster, Ben Folds Five, Violent Femmes, Colin Hay, OMD, Howard Jones, Better Than Ezra, and KT Tunstall.
The band recently returned from their successful UK tour, which culminated in a sold out show at London’s Royal Albert Hall. Louder Than War stated: “BNL have kept crowds coming back due to their sharp, sensitive pop and thrilling, fun live shows.” The audio from that show was recorded and several songs are due to be released next month.
Detour de Force, produced by Juno and Grammy award winners Eric Ratz and Mark Howard, is the band’s broadest reaching and most diverse album to date, fusing the distinct writing voices of Ed Robertson, Kevin Hearn, and Jim Creeggan into a cohesive work. Its 14 tracks include the sonically adventurous “Flip”, the hopeful and infectious “Good Life” (its video features the band playfully navigating their beloved hometown of Toronto), and “New Disaster” (a clever, sardonic comment on our times with an animated, comic book-style video). The album’s stylistic voyage moves from the uptempo fun of “Flat Earth” and country-flavored “Roll Out” to the gentle melodies of “Live Well,” “The National Park,” “God Forbid,” “Man Made Lake” and the sonic roller-coaster of the closer, “Internal Dynamo.” Consequence of Sound described the album as “playful in its structure and crowd-ready hooks while thematically addressing the human condition with acuity.”
The long road to Detour de Force began in early 2020, when BNL convened at Ed Robertson's lakeside cottage north of Toronto with producer Mark Howard. Inspired by the Fake Nudes Naked acoustic remake of BNL's last studio album, the idea was "to close ourselves off from the rest of the world," according to Robertson, "and have no distractions and really capture the sound of a band making music together." Songs were prepared in the basement rec room and recorded in a make-shift studio in the living room during a productive five weeks. Then, the pandemic hit, which allowed the band to spend time with the songs. After several months, they moved to Noble Street Studios in Toronto and worked with Eric Ratz (Arkells, Big Wreck, Billy Talent) to reimagine the direction of the record.
In addition to making music, BNL have long been active participants in the environmental movement. They are part of REVERB’s Music Climate Revolution, alongside fellow artists, music industry leaders, and fans, with a commitment to reduce their carbon footprint and use their voices to demand climate action.
Over the course of 33 years, the beloved quartet has sold 15 million records worldwide and built up an arsenal of hits including "If I Had $1,000,000,” "One Week,” "Pinch Me," and "Big Bang Theory Theme." Widely acknowledged as one of the best live acts on the planet, BNL has hosted a cruise, had its own ice cream flavor, amassed two Grammy nominations, eight Juno Awards, and was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 2018. The band recently wrote and recorded “Landed on My Head”, the end title song for HBO’s Super Bob Einstein Movie. As Ed Robertson, Jim Creeggan, Tyler Stewart, and Kevin Hearn put it on “Good Life,” "Wasn't easy but it turned out alright/Wouldn't trade it for another...You don't wanna miss this mutha."
