Today, Barrie Lindsay — known more simply by her moniker Barrie — announces her new 5K EP. More light-hearted and off-the-cuff than the emotionally-charged tracks from her 2022 album Barbara, Barrie named the EP after the common foot race. Explains the avid runner: "The music felt like a good arc for running. I want this music to be good company; steady and light enough. It’s literal and it’s metaphorical; this EP is meant to be your running partner for whatever form of 5K you’re doing."

The aptly-titled lead single "Races" provides a glimpse at the unique sonic landscape Barrie traverses on this 5K: Its baroque daydream pop is set to a 12/8 time signature, with crashing drums and stately keyboards that swoon with giddy romance. Listen to "Races" here: https://lnk.to/barrie-5k

While most would finish listening to the project front-to-back before finishing a 5 kilometer run, each listen to 5K unveils a new lovingly crafted detail. Whether it’s the cinematic cascade of sampled woodwinds on opener "Nocturne Interlude" or "Unholy Appetite" summoning a uniquely expansive vision of Madchester, with its masculine bravado replaced by yearning melodicism, 5K showcases Barrie in an exploratory mood, sketching out new sonic territory that remains true to the enveloping sound world that has become Barrie’s signature.

2022 was a landmark year for Barrie, seeing her embark on her first-ever run of headlining shows, touring alongside Alex G (US) and Japanese Breakfast (UK/EU), and releasing her album Barbara to critical acclaim from the likes of The New York Times, NPR Music, Billboard, Consequence, and so many more (see quotes below). At the end of last year, her song “Doesn’t Really Matter” debuted at #16 on Spotify’s Indie Pop Global Charts, graced the cover of Spotify’s All New Indie Playlist, and received support from SiriusXMU, KCRW, WXPN, BBC6 Music, and BBC Radio 1. It was featured in The New York Times Playlist and was praised by Consequence as “a great example of Barrie taking the vulnerable impulses of her 2022 album ‘Barbara’ and advancing upon them with her unique pop language.”

This week, Barrie will perform an in-store at Rough Trade NYC on Thu, Feb 09 before traveling to Austin for SXSW in March. Check out a performance of “Quarry” on Gorilla vs. Bear here to get a taste of the show-stopping, pastel-palette Ronettes-meets-K Records choreography of her live show.
