Blue Note and Luminary Announce yasiin bey & Talib Kweli Are Black Star at Sony Hall on Tuesday, November 15th
Show Follows Black Star’s Debut SNL Performance on November 12thToday, Blue Note Entertainment Group and Luminary announce a special pop up show with seminal hip-hop duo Black Star (Talib Kweli and yasiin bey) at Sony Hall on Tuesday, November 15th at midnight.
The show comes on the heels of Black Star’s debut SNL performance – where comedian Dave Chappelle is hosting – which is set for November 12th.
Black Star has always been preoccupied with the passage of time. Their 1998 debut Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are Black Star tied references to Black popular culture from across eras—the 1997 drama Eve’s Bayou, DJ Clue mixtapes, Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti’s “Black Man’s Cry,” and Toni Morrison novels—to a then-evolving consciousness within hip-hop in general and the streets of Brooklyn in particular.
The album became one of hip hop’s most revered works and launched both already rising stars into the MC stratosphere. bey and Kweli are now internationally recognized icons of rap, activism, and entertainment. After an extended hiatus of almost 25 years, the duo released their highly anticipated sophomore album No Fear of Time this year via leading subscription based podcast and audio entertainment platform, Luminary.
Madlib produced all of the beats for the album’s nine songs and according to Pitchfork “the people need Black Star now more than ever” calling out “So be it,” “Sweetheart. Sweethard. Sweetodd.,” and “Supreme alchemy” as the pair’s “best performances across the album.”
Earlier this year, Black Star performed alongside Robert Glasper, Dave Chapelle, Thundercat, Flying and Lotus, at the brand’s debut Blue Note Napa Festival.
In addition to No Fear of Time, Luminary is the home for bey and Kweli’s other audio projects, including their groundbreaking Luminary Original show with Dave Chappelle, The Midnight Miracle, as well as Luminary/UPROXX Original People’s Party with Talib Kweli.
