Today, Bright Light Bright Light drops “Every Emotion”, his explosive new single featuring dance legend Ultra Naté. Harnessing the unmistakable energy of the 90s, the track sounds unlike anything Bright Light Bright Light has released before, and is taken from his forthcoming fifth studio album ‘Enjoy Youth’, due for release on May 17. |
“Every Emotion” is an uplifting and infectious slice of dance-pop, offering a further glimpse into the new album which is focused on joy and optimism and will serve as a shimmering reminder that life is meant for living, even in its hardest moments. Ultra Naté is one of Bright Light Bright Light’s most important influences, inspiring his love of dance music. “In school, Ultra's voice was on the radio ALL the time when 'Free', 'Found A Cure' and 'New Kind Of Medicine' were all chart hits,” he explains. “I was absolutely in love with her voice and her style. She was the COOLEST thing and definitely helped spark my deep love of dance music. Getting to work with her is just such a headspin for teenage me. She's the absolute kindest and nicest woman, has the most powerful voice and a discography to die for.” The two artists met when they they performed together at NYC Pride, duetting on Ultra’s iconic cover of ‘If You Could Read My Mind’ (a #23 UK hit released as the supergroup Stars on 54 with Amber & Jocelyn Enriquez). Speaking about the collaboration, Ultra Naté said: “‘Every Emotion’ is such a brilliant song and I’m so happy to be a part of this Bright Light Bright Light release. The mood of the entire project is a feel good vibe, with top production and melodies that make you feel like you’re dancing on air! And of course getting the opportunity to create a video clip that’s fresh and fun, to go with the project - brings an appeal that really makes ‘Every Emotion’ the moment we’ve been waiting for.” The single arrives with remixes by James Antony, a renowned NYC DJ with a residency at The Eagle and a prominent figure in the US nightlife circuit, John J-C Carr, a favorite on the Billboard Dance chart, and Thomas CW, another notable NYC nightlife DJ. Today’s track drop joins fellow prerelease sister tracks “You Want My…”, “Boys Etc.”, “Sweet Release”, “Down To One” and “I Don’t Know What I’m Gonna Do” which have punctuated the last two years like shining, glittery gemstone bites of effervescent synth-pop. Elsewhere on the album, Bright Light Bright Light partners up with GRAMMY-nominated Mykal Kilgore, Sam Harper (the voice on Riton and Nightcrawlers’ international smash “Friday”), Berri (known for her huge 90s hit “Sunshine After The Rain”) and Beth Hirsch (who features on Air’s classic album ‘Moon Safari’). Packed full of glittering electropop, 90s house and big dollops of Hi-NRG synthpop, it's an album that acknowledges the darkness in the world around us and offers up an escapist alternative, even if just for a brief moment. “The album is written to help myself and the listener feel joy when joy isn't always the dominant feeling,” said Thomas. “I feel like since COVID, it's been harder to let myself be as buoyant and optimistic as I previously was, so these songs are reminders to myself to keep embracing fun, silliness, playfulness, camp, drama – to let emotions take hold of you and run with them, and to remember the joy of connection with the people you love.” The Huff Post has called Bright Light Bright Light a “purveyor of pulsing, electro-pop anthems that lean into glittery nostalgia” while his last album ‘Fun City’ (which served as a love letter to marginalized communities & a journey through queer history) had Billboard calling his music “a much-needed dance escape” and Rolling Stone proclaiming that the record offers a “buoyant beat to dance through pain and trouble.” Bright Light Bright Light is an artist, producer, composer and DJ, currently based in NYC. He is known for notably being the first - and to date, only - unsigned artist to perform on Graham Norton’s BBC One TV show, for opening for Cher on her world tour, for regular tea dance events around NYC, and for a slew of colorful and infectious pop collaborations, production credits, and/or touring slots alongside Elton John, Jake Shears, Andy Bell, Ellie Goulding, Sam Sparro, Jujubee, Initial Talk, and many more. Over the years his music has been heralded by the likes of Billboard, Rolling Stone, Esquire, Paper Magazine, USA Today, The Line of Best Fit, The Guardian and more. He cites the music of Kylie Minogue, Girls Aloud, the Scissor Sisters, Grace Jones and Goldfrapp as major inspirations, as well as The Legend of Zelda & classic Nintendo, horror films (his stage name is a reference to a quote from Gremlins and he has a special love of the Giallo movement) and his beloved cat Sunny. |
