Brittany Davis Unleashes A Celebration Of Limitless Love On “Supremely Funky” (Spin), Old School R&B-Infused “Soft As The Sand”
Delivers “Potent Expression Of Hope” (NPR Music) On Debut Album Image Issues Out March 1 Via Loosegroove RecordsSpring 2024 Shows Announced At Seattle’s 2,800-Capacity Paramount Theatre, SXSW, Non-Commvention And Bottlerock
“It's important for me to portray that love between gay people isn't just normal, it's real. It doesn't always have to be dramatized, and it also doesn't have to be hidden,” says Brittany Davis on their new track “Soft As The Sand” - a spirited celebration of love for everyone, and especially the LGBTQIA+ community. That message is brought home poignantly as Davis croons over funky electro beats and vibrant piano riffs: “no matter where she go, I love her heart and soul.” It’s this type of candid soulfulness that weaves throughout Image Issues in its entirety - Davis’ debut ‘sonic film’ due out March 1 on Loosegroove Records. "As a blind person, I've never had an actual visual experience," says Davis of the intentions and inspirations behind the 26-track collection. "Sound is the way I've always seen my world." It’s through this lens that Davis reflects on a lifetime of battles against injustices like racism, trauma and violence - all delivered with a profound sense of hope and power. “Soft As The Sand” follows “Sepricon,” which was named a Today’s Top Tune selection by KCRW alongside a video from Tony-nominated choreographer Donald Byrd (The Color Purple, The Minstrel Show) - and the just-released “Fallout.”

Image Issues finds Davis responsible for nearly every sound on the album, serving as the songwriter, engineer, co-producer, and multi-instrumentalist on each of the songs (and spoken word pieces dubbed ‘Treadmill Memories’) that comprise this project. From within their vibrant creativity and seemingly-limitless talent comes a cross-genre musical landscape inspired by artists like Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, Alicia Keys, Jimi Hendrix, James Brown, Beyonce and Cardi B. This Seattle musician’s debut also comes with support from Pearl Jam founder/guitarist Stone Gossard - a close friend, mentor and hero of their shared hometown scene. The two play together in the band Painted Shield, and Gossard will release Image Issues on his own Loosegroove Records this March 1. Davis also collaborated on Image Issues with co-producer Josh Evans (Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Brandi Carlile), who notes: “it’s like a Prince record or a Stevie Wonder record. It almost feels a little subversive to make music like this…it’s sneaking a real art project into a pop record.”
Davis’ debut album follows their breakout I Choose To Live EP, which saw them make notable appearances at SXSW and on NPR Music’s Tiny Desk. See below for upcoming tour dates and festival appearances, with more to be announced soon.
