Praise for Covers

“With a voice of mystery, conviction, ache, and awe, Marshall locates new depths of emotion in obscurities and pop songs alike. In reinterpreting classics, she has furthered her stature as one” - NEW YORKER

"Her voice has never sounded better than it does on Covers; her greatest interpretive talent might be her ability to slip between the lines of the stave and capture shades of emotion so subtle that they defy naming" - PITCHFORK

“Underlines Marshall’s ability to drill right into the emotional core of other people’s songs and to make them sound as if they have always belonged in her voice"  MOJO, 4 stars

“Marshall reinvents and inhabits others’ songs so completely that they sound like originals, and ‘Covers’ is no exception: The songs here veer from just-recognizable to barely recognizable at all, with the focus on her unmistakable voice” - VARIETY

“She excels at digging into the emotional quicksand of each song to draw out surprising themes and angles” - AV CLUB

“Hits like a freight train"” – NYLON

"Windblown and expansive” – FADER

Over the course of her decades-spanning, accomplished discography, singer/songwriter/producer Cat Power AKA Chan Marshall has consistently contributed a musical conversation that spans genres and generations, and her new album Covers out now on Domino is no exception.  The album has been met with widespread praise from The New Yorker, MOJO, Pitchfork, Vulture, FADER, NYLON, Rolling Stone and more, all highlighting her unmatched art of song interpretation, as well as echoing Marshall’s multi-generational impact.  Read recent features with Stereogum, an in-conversation with Pretenders’ Chrissie Hynde for Interview Magazine, a recent appearance on WTF with Marc Maron and listen to Covers here

The self-produced Covers is Marshall’s third collection of covers, following 2000’s seminal The Covers Record and the blockbuster Jukebox from 2008 and features fresh interpretations of Frank Ocean, Nick Cave, Iggy Pop, The Pogues, The Replacements, Lana Del Rey, Bob Seger, Jackson Browne and more.

“When I do covers, I feel such a responsibility to the artists I love—some I’ve never met, some I have,” Marshall explains, and longtime fans will instantly recognize some of the covers included here from live sets in recent years.”

The new album showcases Marshall’s singular chronicling of the ever-evolving great American songbook - featuring her own personal rendition of Billie Holiday's “I’ll Be Seeing You,” an owe to a lost friend, Frank Ocean's "Bad Religion," the Dead Man's Bones' "Pa Pa Power,” the Pogues' "A Pair Of Brown Eyes,” plus an updated rendition of the Cat Power song "Hate" from The Greatest (2006), retitled “Unhate” for the album. Covers is at once a reminder of Marshall’s artistically intuitive power and the latest chapter in a truly illustrious career.

Earlier this year she appeared on The Late Late Show With James Corden and will embark on an extensive full band US tour that begins April 13, includes Brooklyn Steel on April 18, and continues into the summer. Additionally, Marshall recently scored, alongside Eddie Vedder and Glen Hansard, the soundtrack to Sean Penn’s film Flag Day. Marshall’s work continues to ripple through genres, and was recently covered by Depeche Mode’s lead singer Dave Gahan and Soulsavers, for a fresh reinterpretation of her song “Metal Heart,” the first single from their forthcoming album.
