[January 17, 2025 ] Justin Tyson announces his debut solo record The Paper Doors, out February, 28 2025. This is Tyson’s first introduction to the world outside of his frequent collaborations with jazz giants including Herbie Hancock, Thundercat, Terrace Martin, Keyon Harold, Bilal, Yebba, and Robert Glasper, with whom he won a Grammy for his pivotal work on Black Radio 3. Frequent collaborator and jazz innovator, esperanza spalding, can be heard contributing ethereal background vocals on the album as well. The Paper Doors showcases Tyson’s distinct ability to fuse intricate rhythms with inventive, genre-defying sounds. 

The forthcoming album pushes musical boundaries by seamlessly blending jazz sensibilities with experimental hip-hop, offering dreamy, Dilla-esque soundscapes that invite transcendence. Tyson has performed on the world’s biggest stages, from Montreux Jazz to NPR's Tiny Desk and most recently played a full month at the Blue Note in New York City, accompanying Robert Glasper for the 6th year of his Robtober residency. Watch Tyson’s creative drum solo from his show with Glasper in Marseille, France: HERE.

The Paper Doors delves into Places: both shared spaces that shape cultures and private ones that form personal identity. It highlights the importance of safe, solitary environments for imagination to thrive and explores the symbolic “Paper Doors,” thresholds that invite engagement with different Places. By reclaiming identity in a world crowded with influences, the album revisits the Places of memory, offering a journey of self-discovery through the reanimation of the past.
