When photographer Deborah Feingold moved to New York City in the late 1970s, her relationship with a jazz musician led her to embrace a spirit of improvisation in her work. Early commissions for Chet Baker and Miles Davis led to work with Rolling Stone, GQ, The New York Times and Musician Magazine among others, and indelible images of Bono, Madonna, Mick Jagger, James Brown, Prince, Tina Turner, Tom Waits, Brian Eno, Philip Glass, Joey Ramone, and Sam Rivers, to name a few.
On September 30, Damiani Books will release 'Music,' Feingold's first-ever anthology, featuring over 75 photographs spanning nearly 40 years. Grammy Award-winning music critic Anthony DeCurtis wrote the foreword and praises the collection for presenting these iconic musicians "not as celebrities... and not necessarily even as artists, but as people." DeCurtis says these photos "are not the result of clever concepts... their fascination and intrigue emerge from the hum and buzz of musicians' everyday lives." Retronaut just premiered the photos of Deborah's 1980 session with Prince featured in 'Music,' go here for more.
Feingold's unique ability to put her subjects almost immediately at ease engendered the kind of rare moments of honesty, intimacy and connection that became the hallmark of her work: an early Prince photo session backstage at NYC's Bottom Line ended with the artist turning the tables and shooting Feingold; a moment of stillness photographing Brian Eno on his SoHo rooftop led to a deeper understanding of his then-new concept of ambient music; an impromptu trip to a broom closet turned a Spinal Tap shoot into inspired lunacy.
Deborah has continued to photograph the biggest figures in the culture, including President Barack Obama, Bill Gates, and Johnny Depp, and has created countless album and book covers; she currently has two book covers on the NY Times Best Sellers list ('One Nation' by Ben Carson, MD and 'Finding Me' by Michelle Knight).
Feingold will soon announce book release events in select markets this fall for the release of 'Music.'
