Today, Delta Rae released their new album The Light, their first since going independent in July 2019. Made possible by the Kickstarter campaign that made them the most funded independent band in Kickstarter's history, The Light is their most emotionally robust body of work to-date, and is the first part of an ambitious double album that showcases both sides of this genre-bending sextet; its twin collection The Dark is out in 2021.

The Light is an eclectic mix laden with soulful exploration and mysticism. Says Billboard, "[The Light] is intensely joyous” and is "a gospel-soaked declaration that swerves between honoring their North Carolina home and dealing with dark, tumultuous emotions.” Written throughout the band's ten-year history, the album traces the band back to its origins in the woods of Durham, North Carolina. Inspiration came from a range of personal experiences and external influences, with the band tackling the bliss, pain and enigmas that form life's biggest mysteries. From reveling in the power of love (“Back to The Garden”) to tearing down the industry's bullies in a heart-thumping call for strength (“Stronger Than A Lion”), Delta Rae pivots between doo-wop and folk sounds to deliver a sonic quest that's full of honesty and hope.

Coming five years after their last LP, The Light is Delta Rae at their most joyful and unbridled and is a reinforcement of the fearless and progressive force that's been core to the band since its inception. With songs off the new album like “Only In America” they are bringing light to political and social issues that plague the US. “Soft Place To Land” offers a rebuke to toxic masculinity, while “No One Will Miss Me” is a vulnerable look at tackling depression. At a time when the world could use a heavy dose of compassion and solidarity, The Light is shining just in time.

About Delta Rae

Delta Rae is a genre-bending sextet based in Nashville, TN. Comprised of the Hölljes siblings—Ian, Eric, and Brittany—and rounded out by close friends vocalist Liz Hopkins, drummer Mike McKee and bassist Grant Emerson, this tight-knit group of musicians weaves together the sonic experimentation of Talking Heads with the mystical aesthetics and family dynamic of Fleetwood Mac and adds a country twang. They went independent during the summer of 2019 and then successfully ran the biggest Kickstarter campaign for an indie band in the fundraising platform’s history (raising over half a million dollars total - starting with $30,000 in 30 minutes, $60,000 in an hour). Receiving praise by the likes of David Byrne for their protest songs and being covered by BillboardNPRForbes, and Rolling StoneDelta Rae has accrued over 30 million streams on Spotify, recorded alongside rock legend Lindsey Buckingham and have performed everywhere from The Tonight Show and Conan to festival slots at Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, and more.
