Dillon Carmichael Announces 14-Track Sophomore Album ‘Son of A,' Due October 22nd
Debuts “Pickin’ Up Girls” Collaboration with The Cadillac Three Today (9.3)Country music’s “most convincing young star since Stapleton” (Rolling Stone) Dillon Carmichael will release his sophomore album ‘Son of A’ on October 22. It’s the follow-up to his breakout debut, ‘Hell On An Angel’ (2018), and it features 14 tracks, half of which were co-written by the Kentucky native, with seven produced by Jon Pardi and Ryan Gore, including the brand-new, nostalgia-driven “Pickin’ Up Girls,” which features The Cadillac Three, out today (9.3). ‘Son of A’ continues Carmichael’s lauded neo-traditional approach to country music, “matching the textures of yesteryear to the melodies of today” (The New York Times) in a seamless and unique fashion. “Hot Beer,” Carmichael’s "12-ounce can of sarcastic, commercial potential” (Billboard), and the hilarious “Big Truck,” co-written alongside David Lee Murphy and Jessi Alexander, showcase a more playful side to the Kentucky native, while “Paychecks and Longnecks,” one of four Dann Huff-produced tracks, perfectly pairs his burly, charismatic twang with a blue-collar-inspired hook.
“Family Tree,” produced by Phil O’Donnell, and “Hose Water” each tip the hat to Carmichael’s southern-bred roots, while the aptly-chosen title track, “Son of A,” which O’Donnell also produced and co-wrote with Carmichael and Casey Beathard, is a tear-jerking highlight and an anthemic “thank you” to those who raised him. The breezy “Man Made a Bar” is a mid-tempo cure for heartbreak and juxtaposed with the timely “Red, White, Camo and Blue,” a tribute to the Land of the Free. The humor and Bakersfield-fueled fun aside, Carmichael's traditional country love songs are still plentiful with “Leave The Lovin’” and “Since You’ve Been In It,” two tunes that showcase the effortless, buttery tone the 6’4” country stalwart is known for — the voice The New York Times likened to that of Randy Travis.
The sole collaboration “Pickin’ Up Girls,” features The Cadillac Three in a bass-driven singalong that could have easily been pulled straight from a jukebox in the ‘90s, and the same can be said for “Gonna Wish You Did,” a nostalgic nod to living life to its fullest. Capping the project on a heartbreaking, high note, “Somewhere She Ain’t” and “Baby, I Would” both find Carmichael in a vulnerable state with his southern-bred, deep-holler vocals on full display.
