Downtown's Kalifowitz on How Global Reach+Local Touch Gets Songwriters Paid
In the new issue of Billboard, Ed Christman checks in with Downtown Music Publishing CEO Justin Kalifowitz to discuss "how global expansion and a dedicated local touch can get songwriters paid and the business back on track."
The story digs into Downtown's expansion in cities like Tokyo and Nashville, their recent deals with the likes of Ryan Tedder and Niall Horan, working with the city to launch the first-ever New York Music Month, and how over 100,000 songwriters now use their open platform Songtrust to earn money on 1.3 million copyrights. Downtown is currently expanding Songtrust to the broader music community of publishers, distributors, and other rights owners.
