Elvis Costello Makes Carnegie Hall Debut June 24th & 25th
Elvis Costello will make his Carnegie Hall debut as a headliner with two solo shows dubbed "The Last Year of My Youth" on Tuesday, June 24th and Wednesday, June 25th. Costello first played Carnegie Hall in 2001, in a now-famous performance of "Gimme Some Money" with Spinal Tap.
During his solo tour of November 2013, Costello often announced a theme for the evening upon taking the stage, be it "Love & Deceit" ("I have a lot of those songs" he told the crowd in Burlington, Vermont) or his songs of commentary during the "Peace & War" show in Washington D.C or "Vaudeville & Exile" in Boston, singing the songs of his family's three generations in the traveling and performing life, creating a spontaneous narrative out of combining songs written as much as forty years apart.
By the end of the 19-date run Costello had performed over two hundred different titles, most of them his own compositions.
It is thought that the two Carnegie Hall shows may feature in excess of fifty different songs, both his celebrated and acclaimed songs and rarely heard gems, gathered together under the black comic banner, "The Last Year of My Youth."
Costello's solo performances over the last several years have become legendary:
"powerful" (Burlington Free Press)
"remarkable" (Esquire)
"exhilarating" (American Songwriter)
