Just in time for the ushering in of spring, the undeniably enchanting Gavin Turek drops “SLIDE” (via her own label Madame Gold Records), her first new track of 2021 and an ode not sweating the small stuff and keeping on keeping on. It’s a gorgeous slice of 70s funk-inspired R&B that with assistance from self-described “tropical funk” multi-hyphenate bLAck pARty and her longtime producer Chris Hartz (Childish Gambino) that delivers soulful nostalgia and effortless vocals from both artists whose chemistry is palpable. NPR once said that “one way or another, Gavin Turek is going to entertain you”, and “SLIDE” is no exception.

Taking inspiration from badass divas like Grace Jones and Tina Turner, 70s R&B icons like Curtis Mayfield and the Isley Brothers, and modern day soul pioneers like Raphael Saadiq and Tame Impala, Gavin’s sound has evolved over the years floating through the genres of disco, electronic dance, and soul-pop.

Today’s release of “SLIDE” uncovers an artist who has gone through a metamorphosis, harnessing her talents and spreading her wings at the birth of a new sonic era and musical project (more details to come). It’s an honorable throwback to the past while undeniably fresh and current in the modern music world.

Of the track’s inspiration, Gavin said “as an artist it’s too easy to get discouraged by rejection in this process. Time continues to escape regardless, and you must choose to slide into the next step. You must decide to keep going whether or not you get the validation you seek,” adding that working with bLAck pARty “really brought the song to a whole other level energetically. I’ve always loved his essence and he effortlessly captured the vibe and the message. ”

You may have heard of Gavin in the past be it through her entrancing solo work, acclaimed collaborations with TOKiMONSTA or past performances onConan, and as back-up for Mayer Hawthorne, Cee Lo Green, and Tuxedo all on Jimmy Kimmel Live!. Stereogum has said her music “utilizes a colorful palette of deep bass, starry keys, and Turek’s own voice, which is practically a throwback in its own right” while OkayPlayer simply stated that she is “a bright ray of sunshine”.
