[November 14th, 2025] Trailblazing alt-pop pioneer girli returns with the striking new single ‘Better Undressed’, the first glimpse into a new creative chapter that redefines her artist persona. Known for her shimmering high-concept production and fearless commentary, girli is now pivoting toward a more grounded, girl-next-door energy - trading polish for texture and intimate expression.

‘Better Undressed’ is a bold, empowering return from one of the UK’s most distinctive voices in opinionated yet relatable pop. Honest, impulsive and irresistibly catchy, it dives into the push and pull of love, lust and letting go with playful confidence and a driving, feel-good sound.

Following the glossy sophistication of her sophomore album, girli’s new era strips away the gloss to reveal something grainier.

“Better Undressed is a song for the people who can’t do no contact post breakup. The only thing weirder than getting undressed with someone is getting redressed after. Going from knowing someone intimately to having to pretend you never knew them like that, and move on when you still yearn for that connection, is super hard.” - girli

‘Better Undressed’ combines textured guitars, unfiltered vocals and a subtle bedroom-pop sensibility. Lines, such as “come on over, we could call it closure” and “I wanna show you my post-breakup glow up, that I got outta spite”, demonstrate how lyrically, it grapples with the grittiness between closure and temptation - the all-familiar pull toward an ex you’d sworn you’d outgrown. It’s equal parts confessional and self-aware, balancing late night honesty with a darkly satirical sense of humour - all while maintaining the bold directness girli’s fans love her for.

Set across a patchwork of DIY spaces - garage rooms, peeling walls and play parks - the ‘Better Undressed’ music video serves as a visual shift, accompanying the track’s distinctive sonic change. The track itself pulls us into the nostalgic era of the early 2000s, and these supporting visuals reflect just that. Through the lens of a grainy camcorder, we are introduced to girli and her band - who are clad in nothing but their underwear. Their performance takes place on a messy pile of clothes that lends itself as their stage. As the video progresses the shots reverse to display the musicians layering on mismatched clothing. Whilst the lyrics to the song can be satirical at times, there is also an underlying current of needing to be close to someone but knowing it isn’t right. These layers of clothing are a clear representation of learning to be okay without them. girli represents the stage of longing, and as more and more clothes get layered up it shows the inner healing and moving on. The intertwining shots also feature unconventional outfits (such as a huge skirt over baggy jeans). This shows in every place she goes; she is growing better in herself and the distance.

Since emerging with her breakthrough sophomore album, Matriarchygirli has carved a space in the alternative scene for bold, boundary-pushing storytelling. Her ability to merge pop essence with underground energy has earned her a tight-knit and dedicated fanbase.

As an openly LGBTQ+ artist and advocate for social change, girli continues to intertwine her personal journey with broader cultural conversations. Her past work has touched on themes of identity, politics, mental health, and more - and this new chapter builds on that same spirit of activism, but through a softer, more human lens. ‘Better Undressed’ captures this evolution in full color: unapologetically open yet sonically confident.
