New Sample Pack Features Favorite Moments of Inertia, Debut EP From New Duo of James Mapley Brittle & Sylvan Esso’s Nick Sanborn

Experience Inertia, Out Now via Psychic Hotline, With a World of Art by Eric Timothy Carlson & Aaron Anderson: HERE

After releasing their debut Inertia EP and “distilling the purest essence of rave” (Bandcamp Daily), GRRL x Made of Oak now invite fans and fellow producers to further immerse themselves with CONFIGURATION. Out today via Splice, and the platform’s Moment label, the downloadable sample pack expands the new language and sonic world that James Mapley Brittle (GRRL) and Sylvan Esso’s Nick Sanborn (Made of Oak) have cultivated across their inaugural, unexpected collaboration. From crunchy kicks to electrical zaps, analog imperfections and danceable drum patterns, CONFIGURATION is both a toolkit and gateway to experiencing the exhilarating energy of Inertia

As two mainstays of Durham, NC’s eclectic dance community, who make very different types of music, James Mapley-Brittle and Nick Sanborn have crossed paths at many of the same parties over the years, but it was a conversation about their mutual love for peak-hour club music that ultimately brought them together to make Inertia. Amidst the woods of Betty’s studio in Chapel Hill, they created not only an EP of four songs thrilling enough for the height of their respective live sets, but a massive library of analog recordings – their favorite moments of which became polished in CONFIGURATION

“Our collaboration is more about capturing that raw, spur-of-the-moment energy and less about making the cleanest, most-perfecting-sounding thing possible. Noise is good,” says GRRL, a longtime NTS radio resident and tastemaker of online underground dance music. “Music is all about configurations. Configurations of kick drums, hi hats, notes, etc. so for this pack we wanted to make some stuff that felt kind of weird and fun, but also immediately usable. It’s like a construction kit for bangers.” Showcasing both Sanborn’s expertise around modular synth design and Mapley-Brittle’s mastery of club grooves, CONFIGURATION continues an “unanticipated yet delightful collision of worlds” (PAPER).

Inertia is out now via Psychic Hotline, and available to pre-order on limited vinyl. In addition to its title track,“an energetic cut which delivers trance-tinged techno” (Mixmag), Inertia features “Tempest,” “Interference” and “Aerial,” with the entire EP translated into mind-bending visual form through the artwork of Eric Timothy Carlson and Aaron Anderson (Bon Iver, Boys Noize, Leon Vynehall).

Having recently performed together for the first time at Brooklyn’s Pioneer Works and Los Angeles’ Gold Diggers earlier this summer, GRRL x Made of Oak are preparing to return to the decks for a busy fall. Over the weekend of October 7th-9th, at home in Durham, Boiler Room will present the duo’s set at Slingshot Festival, and on October 15th, GRRL x Made of Oak will play the second annual Psychic Hotline Block Party alongside a lineup of friends like The A's, Arooj Aftab, Bartees Strange, Hand Habits, Indigo De Souza, Joe Rainey, Joe Westerlund, Lambchop and more at Carrboro’s Cat’s Cradle.

Praise for Inertia

“In an unanticipated yet delightful collision of worlds, two of North Carolina's flourishing underground dance scene's mainstays have joined forces for a brand new project bridging the gap between cerebral meticulously crafted techno and playful synth pop”

PAPER

“It’s not clear what they’re putting in the water in North Carolina, but whatever it is, it’s going to make you sweat uncontrollably, screw up your face, and bounce like you’re spring-loaded. This first collaboration between local scenesters James Mapley-Brittle and Nick Sanborn is kind of DJ Stingray electro, blown up to Pacific-Rim-monster size”

Bandcamp Daily

“Hypnotic..trance-tinged techno”

Mixmag

“A sonic wonderland…comprised of four equally enthralling bangers”
