Learn all about the culture, geography, flora and fauna of the Himalayan Mountains in Himalayan Nights, the new children’s picture book out now from bestselling mother-son duo Surishtha Sehgal and Kabir Sehgal.
An annotated bedtime journey through the mountains - complete with luminous, painterly illustrations from Kamala Nair - Himalayan Nights explores the captivating sights of the region as sunset turns to night, with each new page also teaching a fun fact about language, animals, places, and traditions. From golf courses to the Gulmarg Observatory in Kashmir, multi-color buttercups to the berry-eating Bulbul birds, the Sehgals explore the wonders of the mountains while wishing a warm “So jao” (“Go to sleep” in Hindi) to curious young readers in their latest.
Himalayan Nights is the tenth in the Sehgals’ beloved, best-selling series of children’s books about India and its culture, food, history, and holidays, which also includes Festival of Colors, Seven Samosas, and the New York Times bestselling A Bucket of Blessings.
Danielle Collins, Associate Editor of Beach Lane Books (Simon & Schuster), commented on the impact of the Sehgals’ work: “Over the course of their ten books published so far, Kabir & Sue have continued to go above and beyond in bringing the wide world and all of its wonders into the hands of children. Their books are full of a vivacity and generosity that create an instant connection with the youngest minds. Speaking for both myself and the entire team at Beach Lane Books and Simon & Schuster, we are grateful to Kabir & Sue for having us join them on their authorial adventures, and we are proud to have a hand in sharing the joys of Indian culture with young readers everywhere alongside the Sehgals!”
Himalayan Nights is also the authors’ most personal book yet, inspired by Surishtha’s childhood memories - learning how to swim in Nigeen Lake, watching friends play golf - from summers spent with her family in Gulmarg, a hill station in the foothills of the Himalayas. Her father, Dr. Piara Singh Gill, was a renowned Indian cosmic ray physicist who conducted research at the Gulmarg Observatory and laboratory, and every summer, she would fall asleep gazing at the bright stars of the Himalayan Night.
