Today (8.21), Appalachian singer-songwriter Hunter Flynn releases his new song “You, Not Me” via Big Machine Records. Stamped with swampy Southern blues, the song finds Flynn casting the female antagonist as a “wolf in sheep’s clothing,” staying one step ahead of her deception and refusing to be fooled.

“They can’t all be love songs,” said Flynn. “It felt good to take a bad situation I’d found myself in and turn it into this funky tune with the help of some really good buddies of mine.”

Written by Flynn alongside Evan Wayne Ison and Zach Adkins, and produced by David Ferguson (Tyler Childers’ “Feathered Indians”) and M. Allen Parker (The Black Keys’ “Peaches!” and Johnny Blue Skies’ “Mutiny After Midnight”), “You, Not Me” plays out like a Southern noir standoff: a sly saxophone and a rumbling trombone frame Hunter’s read on a woman he already knows is trouble. Through sharp, venomous imagery, he likens her to a cottonmouth waiting to strike and a predator lurking in “deep, dark, murky water,” capturing the tension of recognizing someone’s danger before they can pull you into it.

Hand-drawn in charcoal by Flynn himself, the artwork for “You, Not Me” sees the return of his Appalachian astronaut character, this time alongside the song’s antagonist, wielding a knife behind her back. The track follows Flynn’s “Wasted Day” (5.22), “Robbing A Bank” (6.26) and “Dreams Keep Dying” (7.17), all of which will be featured alongside the new song on his debut album, due later this year.

Flynn recently announced his 36-date Back To My Roots Tour, with stops in Lexington, Asheville, Brooklyn, Boston, Buffalo, Memphis, Nashville, Atlanta and more, alongside select October dates opening for The Turnpike Troubadours’ Live On Tour.
