Raised in the hills of Kentucky, rising singer-songwriter Hunter Flynn puts his Appalachian-soul stamp on Americana-folk with his debut album, ROOTS, arriving October 30 via Nashville Harbor Records & Entertainment. Filled with stories of the people, places, and experiences that have shaped him, ROOTS is a character study set to a musical patchwork of bluegrass-tinged country, folk, blues, gospel, Southern rock and Flynn’s gut-punching vocal delivery.

"Roots is the culmination of all of the people, experiences, and the places that have shaped me into the man I am today," says Flynn. "Sonically it is a broad spectrum that is intended to take the listener from my earliest musical influences to new experimental sounds that make up what I call Appalachian Soul Music. I have lived every song, and with the help of some of the greatest musicians in the world, those songs came to life in a way I could only previously dream about. I poured my heart and soul into every aspect of this project. It is not perfect, I am proud to call it mine."
Across 16 tracks – all written or co-written by Flynn – ROOTS paints a sprawling portrait of the small-town characters who've shaped him (a hippie best friend with a killer weed stash, an ominous, don't-mess-with-him "Big Chief"), the loves that have drifted in and out of his life, and the people who've kept him grounded along the way. Underneath it all runs a darker thread: desperation pushed to its breaking point, the burnout and broken relationships left behind by chasing a dream, and the numbing weight of depression hiding in the small motions of daily life.

After a life-changing car accident in early 2022 pushed Flynn to pursue his creative ambitions wholeheartedly, music became his primary focus. He introduced himself with his debut EP, Appalachian Soul, in May 2023, earning attention for his raw storytelling, emotional honesty and stripped-down sound. He’s been teasing the new album to fans with a string of previously released songs, including “Wasted Day” (5.22), “Robbing A Bank” (6.26) and “Dreams Keep Dying” (7.17), and, most recently, “You, Not Me” (8.21), each accompanied by hand-sketched charcoal artwork featuring his mysterious recurring Appalachian astronaut persona. The cover art for ROOTS takes it one step further with a stunning painting done by Flynn.
Fans can catch Flynn on the road in various cities across the U.S. along his Back To My Roots Tour with stops at AmericanaFest in Nashville, Cumberland Mountain Fall Festival, and a date supporting Turnpike Troubadours & Steve Earle next month. For more information, visit hunterflynn.com/shows.
