Indie Artist Hollis Releases Debut Solo Album Subliminal via AntiFragile

Features Collaborations with LA-Based Indie

Art Pop Artist Dresage & Macklemore Co-Writer Ryan Lewis

Will Perform Subliminal in Full For Upcoming LA + NYC Album Release Parties

Today, Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter Hollis (full name Hollis Wong-Wear) releases her debut solo album, Subliminal via Anti Fragile. The ten-track album is about sinking past the senses and the sensical. It examines the complexity of healing when everything hurts, embracing the unknowns, the falls, and the falling apart. For Hollis, the new album is about the strength to surrender and finding the courage to un-numb in perilous times, now more urgently than ever.

As an impassioned community advocate in her dual cities of Seattle and Los Angeles, Hollis’ music reflects her commitment to social change. Released at the beginning of May, which is both Mental Health Awareness Month and Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month, Hollis’ heartfelt songwriting embodies both themes: using meditation as a tool for coping with hyper-digital anxiety in the title track “Subliminal,” and honoring pioneering Chinese American activist Grace Lee Boggs in her song “Grace Lee.”

Hollis says of Subliminal: “After being an independent artist for over a decade in bands and as a featured vocalist, it’s surreal that my debut solo album is finally here! It’s an opportunity for me to sonically chart the spectrum of feelings, from existential angst and the tension of our historical moment, to meditative reflection, to uninhibited joy, that was evoked during the pandemic and into today. I’m so happy to offer this album to the world in hopes that it can provide a space of healing and resonance the way that writing the songs did for me.”

Subliminal is an impressive accomplishment for the modern day Renaissance woman who is also a speaker, creative generator and community advocate. Complex praises Hollis’ “clean R&B-meets-pop-meditation,” while Spin calls her a "incredibly conscious wordsmith that uses her voice literally and metaphorically."

Singles from Subliminal include “Let Me Not” with Macklemore collaborator Ryan Lewis (Hollis earned a Grammy nomination for her work on The Heist album) as well as Burn Burn,” “Tripwires'' and “Less Like” which Ones To Watch says “takes us for a ride.” Hollis’ most recent single release was a collaboration with LA-art pop artist Dresage called “Bloom Indigo” (which was accompanied by a funky, vibrant animation from Jamie Wolfe – Rolling Stones, King Krule, Local Natives).

Hollis celebrated the release of her album with a sold-out show in Seattle, where she performed the entirety of the Subliminal in full, for the first time ever. She will be making her way down the coast to Los Angeles for an album release party on Saturday, May 14th at The Virgil and perform at Brooklyn’s Starr Bar on Thursday, May 26th. Hollis will join Mac Demarco, Mitski, Animal Collective, Japanese Breakfast and other indie icons for the “Day In Day Out” Festival from August 12-14th in Seattle, Washington. About Hollis:

Hollis is a modern-day Renaissance woman: independent recording artist, vocalist, songwriter, creative producer, and community advocate. With her roots in spoken word and slam poetry through the nationally recognized Youth Speaks program, Hollis is passionate about how creativity and the arts fuel and shape civic discourse and is dedicated to lending her voice and capacities towards vibrant social equity. Known best for her collaborations with Macklemore and Ryan Lewis ("White Walls," for which she was Grammy-nominated), Shawn Wasabi ("Otter Pop") and her band The Flavr Blue, Hollis' solo music -- which she calls existential alt or "sad girl jams" -- showcases her singular voice and rich, daring lyricism. Her debut solo EP half-life was released in February 2020; her self-directed video for her single "All My Weight" premiered on Billboard, and she was named one of Pigeons & Planes' Best New Artists 2020 upon its release. Originally from the Bay Area, Hollis Wong-Wear emerged from the independent hip hop scene in Seattle and has become an in-demand songwriter in her current home of Los Angeles. Alongside her music, Hollis is an impassioned advocate for empowered creativity, a Google Next Gen Policy Leader, and is a frequent featured speaker on the intersection of art, activism, and creators' rights.
