Intelligence Squared U.S. Debates Whether Printing Money Can Boost The Economy At NYC’s Kaufman Cent

Intelligence Squared U.S. Debates Whether Printing Money Can Boost The Economy At NYC's Kaufman Center And Online, November 18

Since the recession began in 2008, central banks in the U.S. and around the world have been printing money to try to boost the economy. This policy, known as quantitative easing in banker jargon, has driven up the price of stocks and bonds. But is it a long-term solution or is it just sowing the seeds of future inflation? On Wednesday, November 18, Intelligence Squared U.S. will address these questions with a live debate on the motion "Central Banks Can Print Prosperity."

Four economists and finance experts will argue the issue in New York for Intelligence Squared U.S., the prestigious non-partisan debate series that holds events across the country. Arguing for the motion are Roger Bootle, one of England's most famous economists, and Simon Johnson, former chief economist for the International Monetary Fund. Arguing against the motion are Edward Conard, founding member of Bain Capital, and Andrew Huszar, who during the recession was in charge of executing the Fed's quantitative easing plan but later became convinced it had been the wrong decision.

The debate will be held at New York's Kaufman Center and stream live online, then air soon after as part of the syndicated public radio show and podcast "Intelligence Squared U.S." On November 18, online viewers can tune in here or via IQ2's app here.

Arguing for the motion:
* Roger Bootle: Executive Chairman, Capital Economics
Roger Bootle, one of London’s best-known economists, is the executive chairman of Capital Economics, which he founded in 1999. Additionally, he is a specialist adviser to the House of Commons Treasury Committee and an honorary fellow of the Institute of Actuaries. He was formerly group chief economist of HSBC and, under the previous Conservative government, he was appointed as one of the Chancellor’s panel of Independent Economic Advisers, the so-called “Wise Men.” In 2012, Bootle and a team from Capital Economics won the Wolfson Prize, the second biggest prize in Economics after the Nobel. He has a long and distinguished record of successful forecasting of major events and market movements, often in contrast to the prevailing orthodoxy of the time.
* Simon Johnson: Professor, MIT & Fmr. Chief Economist, IMF
Simon Johnson is the Ronald A. Kurtz Professor of Entrepreneurship at the MIT Sloan School of Management. He is also a senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics, a co-founder of BaselineScenario.com, a member of the FDIC’s Systemic Resolution Advisory Committee, and a member of the private sector systemic risk council founded by Sheila Bair. From 2009 to 2015, he was a member of the Congressional Budget Office's Panel of Economic Advisers. He is the co-author of several books, including White House Burning: The Founding Fathers, Our National Debt, and Why It Matters to You (2013). Previously, he was the International Monetary Fund's chief economist and director of its research department.

Arguing against the motion:
* Edward Conard: Visiting Scholar, AEI & Former Partner, Bain Capital

Edward Conard is a visiting scholar at the American Enterprise Institute, where he works on US economic policy — in particular, on the effect of taxes, government policies, and finance on risk-taking and innovation. Conard is the author of the New York Times bestseller Unintended Consequences: Why Everything You’ve Been Told About the Economy is Wrong (2012). Since its publication, he has made more than 150 media appearances and has debated major economists, politicians, and journalists, including Paul Krugman, Joseph Stiglitz, and Jon Stewart. Formerly, Conard was a founding member of Bain Capital, where he was in charge of the New York office and responsible for the acquisitions of large industrial companies.
* Andrew Huszar: Sr. Fellow, Rutgers Business School
Andrew Huszar is a senior fellow at Rutgers Business School, where his research focuses on the Federal Reserve System, Dodd Frank legislation, and the global financial crisis. Until June 2012, he was managing director and U.S. head of OTC derivatives client clearing for Morgan Stanley. Before that, for the Federal Reserve Bank of New York (FRBNY), Huszar managed the $1.25 Trillion Agency MBS Purchase Program, the centerpiece of the first round of quantitative easing (QE1). He managed the program's portfolio design and trading strategy, as well as the creation of a permanent, in-house Federal Reserve MBS business platform.
