Jagjaguwar Announces Sentimental Noise, Final Chapter in Four-Part Celebration of The Label's 25th Anniversary

Today, Jagjaguwar announces Sentimental Noise, the final chapter in a four-part series of albums, art and creative endeavors conceived in celebration of the record label's 25th Anniversary. All year long, each installment of Jag Quarterly has resurrected a different mantra from Jagjaguwar's past and imbued it with new meaning, showing how the label's story is not about individuals or specific releases in its catalog, but rather the ensuing worlds that are built through sharing and collaborating, creating art and community, and growing towards the future together. On Sentimental Noise, Jagjaguwar channels the original motto that served as an early guiding force in its journey from the basement of a Charlottesville sushi joint to a home for Angel Olsen, Bon Iver, Dinosaur Jr., Lonnie Holley, Jamila Woods, Moses Sumney, Sharon Van Etten, Unknown Mortal Orchestra and more of the most mythical artists in music.

Out December 3rd, Sentimental Noise is both a 17-song album and 200-page book, each bringing Jagjaguwar face-to-face with its former self. The record uncovers new and unreleased music from some of the label's earliest friends, such as Drunk and Manishevitz, plus Jagjaguwar legends like Wilderness, Oneida and Bloomington post-rock heroes Tammar, special contributions from Jenny Hval, the mysterious noise mongers of Canada's Wold/Fauchion and Oslo's Some Nerve, and two loving tributes to the Patron Saint of Jagjaguwar, John Prine, including a cover of "Blue Umbrella" by Bevel and an original song by Charlotte, NC's Zodiac Lovers. Bookending the LP are two unearthed songs from Atsushi Miura, the man who first allowed Jagjaguwar founder Darius Van Arman to book shows in the basement of his sushi restaurant in Charlottesville, VA. Harkening back to Jagjaguwar's pre-label origins as a cassette compilation and accompanying zine, Sentimental Noise, Issue #001 is equal parts oral history, poetry journal and black metal zine. Its 200 pages were created in collaboration with visual artist Nina Hartmann, and the book features previously unpublished poems from the likes of David Berman and Sharon Van Etten, tribute pieces from Dead Oceans founder Phil Waldorf and Secretly Canadian founders Ben and Chris Swanson, plus troves of images, inside jokes, heartfelt love letters and more spanning Jagjaguwar's past 25 years. Those who purchase Sentimental Noise, Issue #001 will also receive one of two limited edition cassettes - the heretofore unreleased Wilderness album Future Seats, which predates the band's 2005 Jagjaguwar debut; or the album Dialect of the Archonsfrom ambient black metal artist Wold/Fauchion.

Previous editions of Jag Quarterly have all arrived with their own actions and energies, uniquely concocted yet interconnected through the overarching themes of collaboration and community. On the inaugural Dilate Your Heart, the transcendent poetry of Ross Gay was complemented by new compositions from Bon Iver, Mary Lattimore, Angel Bat Dawid, Gia Margaret and Sam Gendel, plus visuals by Eric Timothy Carlson and a signature Sonoma Valley pinot noir bottled by Una Lou Wine Co.

On This is a Mindfulness Drill, Hypnotic Brass Ensemble delivered a full reimagination of Richard Youngs' 1998 album, Sapphie, with vocal performances from Moses Sumney, Perfume Genius and Sharon Van Etten, an ambient Meditation Version by Emily A. Sprague, and guided deep listening experiences created in partnership with mindfulness platform Open.

The third installment, Join The Ritual, nodded to Jagjaguwar's roots in Dungeons & Dragons, while artists and alumni of the label paid homage to the music that originally captured the imaginations of Darius Van Arman and Chris Swanson. Angel Olsen, Bruce Hornsby, Cut Worms, Jamila Woods, Nap Eyes, Okay Kaya, Pink Mountaintops, S. Carey, Spencer Krug, The Besnard Lakes and They Hate Change each covered the songs of Smog, Dinosaur Jr., Tracy Chapman, Built to Spill, R.E.M., Low, Stereolab and more who originally inspired the label into existence, and with the album came a limited edition blend of coffee with Tinker Coffee Co.
