All throughout ‘The Tales People Tell,’ Kelly mines the depths of soul music’s rich history, while seamlessly blending classic soul elements - answer records, tender ballads, and deep funk - with West Coast lowrider soul, hip-hop, the groove of his own collective Monophonics, and gospel perforations similar to that of Lee Moses. Each track sees him slip in and out of different musical characters with the ease of a seasoned professional and having guided the songs from their conception all the way to the record pressing plant, the new release positions him as the singular force missing from soul music.

This Spring, Kelly will be taking songs from ‘The Tales People Tell’ on the road and playing alongside his brand new full band The Atonements' whose groovy, brass-backed melodies are sure to bring audiences to their feet.
