April 25, 2025 -- Lakeshore Records and Broadway Records are set to release the cast recording to the Briarcliff Entertainment film Juliet & Romeo—a striking reimagining of Shakespeare’s classic love story—with original songs and score written and produced by music industry heavyweights Evan “Kidd” Bogart and Justin Gray. The album, which will be released digitally on May 9, has fifteen vividly poignant pop songs including the singles “The Mask I Wear” (available April 25), and “Beat The Same” (available May 2). A separate score album will be released May 16. Written and directed by Timothy Scott Bogart and filmed entirely on location in Italy, the film produced by Hero Entertainment and Rainmaker Films in conjunction with Briarcliff, is in theaters May 9 (Mother’s Day weekend).
To craft the score and the film’s original songs, GRAMMY-winning songwriter and Executive Music Producer Evan “Kidd” Bogart (Beyonce’’s “Halo” and Rhianna’s “SOS”), and award-winning songwriter/producer Justin Gray (Mariah Carey, John Legend), collaborated with writer/director Timothy Scott Bogart to assemble and lead an A-team of chart-topping co-writers. And to really give the music that “leave the theatre humming” vibe, Bogart and Gray employed a few techniques unique to movie musicals. For one, they strategically introduced core melodies and themes from the original songs throughout the film’s score before their full performances, creating a subtle sense of familiarity and leading viewers to associate melodies with characters or themes (think the effect of reprises). Beyond the initial songwriting, Bogart and Gray were deeply involved throughout filming in Italy, too, working directly with the director, recording actors on set, and continuously adapting the music with their team to enhance the on-screen action. The result? A genre-spanning soundtrack with a signature, smash-hit pop sensibility courtesy of some of the industry’s top hitmakers.
Evan Bogart said: “We set out to create an unforgettable musical experience from beginning to end, crafting a sonic identity as distinct as the film itself. From the very first scene, our intention was to channel the raw energy and emotion of the story through the songs and score, just as Shakespeare used soliloquies to express characters’ innermost thoughts and internal conflicts. We employed the poetry of today’s songs to let our characters’ emotions, thoughts and internal struggles pour out of them as they couldn’t contain them anymore. The performances, the movie, the soundtrack, and the score all came together in a way that feels nothing short of epic.”
Justin Gray added: “Working within the structure of a pop song is simple. The goal is to create 3 memorable minutes. With Juliet & Romeo however, Evan and I not only had to approach each song with unique hit song sensibilities, but also understand how each song interacted with the characters and narrative across an entire film, while honoring and supporting Tim’s vision throughout the process. Getting to work on Juliet & Romeo was one of the first times where Songs AND Score were created and produced by the same people. Usually, the two are completely separate teams. Juliet & Romeo has been one of the most creatively rewarding and musical experiences of my career.”
Said Timothy Scott Bogart: “The task I presented Evan and Justin was simply daunting. An hour and fifty-five minutes of music in a two-hour film, and every note of it, was as integral a part of the fabric of the film than any word of dialogue I could have ever written. It truly was a living, breathing thing—sitting on set on a mountaintop at 4am, realizing the horse was taking 4 seconds longer to get into position and Evan and Justin would have to race back to the mobile studio and re-structure everything! There is simply no film without this breathtaking music.”
The cast performing on the album includes industry veterans such as Rebel Wilson (as Lady Capulet), Derek Jacobi, (Friar Lawrence), Dan Fogler (The Apothecary) and GRAMMY winners Tayla Parx (Rosaline), and Ledisi. The album is also a showcase for rising stars Clara Rugaard (in the role of Juliet), Jamie Ward (Romeo), Nicolas Podany (Mercutio), Ferdia Walsh-Peelo (Tybalt) and Martina Luis Ortiz (Veronica).
Set in 1301 at the end of Medieval times, the JULIET & ROMEO Franchise finds our most famous Star-Crossed lovers turning the tides on the history Shakespeare based his own story on, as they reveal the truth to the very future of the Empire. But the biggest twist in this most beloved of tales, is leaving the poetry of Iambic Pentameter in the past, for the original Pop Music that rockets these ever-present themes right to the heart of our characters in the most surprising, and perhaps most powerful way that has ever been seen, or heard, before…
The greatest love story of all time, set to the greatest music of our time.
