Tickets On-Sale Now
March 26, 2026 - Today, legendary biographer Jimmy McDonough and Wolf+Salmon have announced an April 22nd celebration of the life and work of honky-tonk icon Gary Stewart at the LA GRAMMY Museum. Tickets are on-sale now.
Taking place in the Museum's intimate 200-seat Clive Davis Theater, the program will open with McDonough and celebrated actor/comedian Patton Oswalt discussing McDonough’s forthcoming biography Gary Stewart: I Am From The Honky-Tonks, the nearly 40 year process that led to the book’s creation, and McDonough’s long career as a biographer.
This will be followed by a very special performance of Gary Stewart songs by GRAMMY-nominated singer-songwriter and producer Jonathan Wilson (Margo Price, Kesha, Father John Misty), accompanied by veteran steel guitar player Greg Leisz, who played with Stewart.
Set for release by Wolf+Salmon on April 2, Gary Stewart: I Am From The Honky-Tonks is the definitive telling of the life of the late, great honky-tonk legend Gary Stewart. An epic tale of sex, drugs, and country music almost 40 years in the making, the book is the eighth and final biography by Jimmy McDonough (Shakey: Neil Young’s Biography, Tammy Wynette: Tragic Country Queen), and once again reaffirms his status as America’s greatest chronicler of popular culture.
Last week, Rolling Stone published an exclusive excerpt from the book, with writer Jonathan Bernstein praising it as “one of the most adventurous and daring books about a popular musician to come in a long time” while MOJO recently awarded the book 4-stars and The Times (UK) described it as “fascinating…it is, like Gary Stewart’s life, a wild ride”.
In addition to the newly announced GRAMMY Museum program, McDonough will be appearing at bookstores and venues across the country this spring, including a special Gary Stewart tribute event at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in Nashville on April 11. He will be joined in conversation at that event by author and Museum Writer-Editor RJ Smith and Stewart’s daughter Shannon Ashburn.
McDonough will kick off the tour at Powerhouse Arena in Brooklyn on April 5 alongside acclaimed singer/performance artist Tammy Faye Starlite. Dates will continue on to Louisville (Louisville Free Public Library); Nashville (Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum); two dates in Austin — at Waterloo Records, in conversation with Texas Monthly contributor Joe Nick Patoski and w/ live music from Texas troubadour Jake Penrod, and at First Light Books in conversation and with music from Austin singer-songwriter Kevin Dehan (aka Cactus Lee).
The tour will close in Los Angeles with the Grammy Museum, and another special night at Stories Books and Cafe (April 23rd), with McDonough in conversation with veteran publicist, producer and Sirius XM Cowpunks to Nowpunks radio host, Bill Bentley, and a special Stewart-inspired mini-set by legendary Detroit rocker Margaret Dollrod (formerly of Detroit garage rockers Demolition Doll Rods).
