Louise Goffin's Songwriting Philosophy On Display At Masterclasses With The Songwriters' Association Of Washington

The five-week intensive virtual workshop will begin on Aug. 27

With a successful career spanning multi-decades and ten solo albums, Louise Goffin’s passion of sharing her craft with others is evident. She has become a highly sought-after songwriting instructor over the past few years, having instructed intensives and masterclasses internationally. Her latest masterclass series, in partnership with the Songwriters’ Association of Washington (SAW), is a 5-week intensive starting August 27th.

These classes will be held via Zoom over a five-week period where a small group of students will take part in a personal look at their songwriting and how to improve it. The intimate workshop will focus on topics such as realizing you already have all the tools to write, songwriting time-wasters and confidence killers, and more. Since 2014, Goffin has facilitated classes spanning from Los Angeles to London to her own living room, helping to empower songwriters around the world. Dedicated to teaching aspiring writers to tap into their own creativity, she’s contributed to a variety of mentorship and enrichment programs like Rock N’ Roll Fantasy CampWritegirl mentoring program for incarcerated women and her own non-profit The Goffin & King Foundation.

Of her overarching philosophy, Goffin says, “I encourage new songwriters to embrace what’s unique about them and that’s something that doesn’t come naturally. It seems obvious to me but it’s fresh to them. It’s amazing when we can see our strengths. Too often, we’re invisible to ourselves. To be externally focused or to write a song "so that people will like me” or “I’ll have a hit" is not a good place to be. It might motivate you but it’s not going to give you a good idea of a song. When you have a personal agenda and take it to the muse, it doesn’t trust you to receive, crosses it’s arms and goes on strike, saying “I’m not doing that!” You’ve got to stay playful and look inside for your songs.”

Her classes are highly praised, with participants able to unleash their full songwriting potential. Some have gone onto be successful creatives in their own right. It was a masterclass volunteer who inspired her to share her and her friends’ own stories of songwriting to start her own podcast, Song Chronicles

Goffin was surrounded by music making, songwriting, and a community of artists growing up and she marinated in some of the best songwriting influences anyone could wish for, not least, her parents, the prominent songwriters and musicians Carole King and Gerry Goffin. The music in her blood has led to a lasting career. Goffin is a singer/songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and produced a GRAMMY-nominated record. She’s performed her own songs, both opening for her mother and playing alongside her at Hyde Park, worked with some amazing musicians -- including Rufus Wainwright, Chris Difford (Squeeze), Benmont Tench (Tom Petty), Pete Thomas (Elvis Costello), arranger Van Dyke Parks -- and has had her songs championed by David Gilmore, Linda Ronstadst, and Michael MacDonald. More recently, she released her tenth album Two Different Movies
