Luke Steele Finds A Moment Of Calm Among Waves Of Panic On “Running, Running”

As he rolls out his solo debut Listen To The Water (out May 13), Luke Steele continues to reveal the album’s singular charm and expansive sonic treasures. Today he shares“Running Running,” a patiently unfolding lullaby that grasps at calm in a moment of anxiety. With elements of Bowie’s sci-fi-addled mysticism, the analog-meets-synthetic experimentation of ‘80s King Crimson, and the enigmatic yet meditative acoustic soundworlds of Mutations-era Beck, Steele sings himself through overwhelming waves of panic. “Running running, round in my head / I can feel it coming back again,” Steele sings, as lilting pedal steel and vintage drum machines provide distinctive color and a sense of perpetual motion towards the horizon.

On Listen To The Water, Luke Steele captures a singular blend of innocence and wisdom — allowing an artist with more than 20 years in the industry to break entirely new ground. Shedding the theatrical-leanings and global pop ambitions of Empire Of The Sun, Steele explores a more vulnerable, family-minded space as he ponders life’s big questions. Recorded in a secluded cabin in Northern California (aptly named Eccentric Farm), Listen To The Water revels in Steele’s newfound stillness and the wonder of the natural world. “The crown is off, the make-up is off and this is where we find out what is left,” says Steele. “Sometimes the only way to let something go is through a song. In a way this record has been a bit of a ‘Luke Steele unboxing,’ so to speak.”
On the album’s lead single, “Common Man,” Rolling Stone says Steele “sets a heartfelt tone of human frailty seen throughout the record thanks to its stellar instrumentation and powerful lyrics.” Meanwhile, the NME says “Armageddon Slice” finds Steele “meditating on mankind’s future above gentle fingerpicked acoustic guitar and warm synth pads.”
