Today, Mapache — the Los Angeles-based duo of Sam Blasucci and Clay Finch who deliver “a groove so strong you can basically hear the sunshine” (NPR Music) - share their vibey instrumental version of Stevie Wonder’s classic “You Are The Sunshine Of My Life.” The track comes from their new covers EP 3, out next Friday on November 19 via Innovative Leisure. Mapache’s version of the Stevie standard radiates a hazy warmth, showcasing the duo’s intricate acoustic pickings atop a warped surf organ and a beachy percussive pulse.

In the spring of 2020, Mapache was set to hit the road on their first headlining tour across America. They had just released From Liberty Street, a crystallization of their alchemic sound: close harmony and earning lyrical sensibility; a seemingly effortless, unmistakably Californian musicality; and brotherly camaraderie.

However, the universe had different plans in mind. After playing their LA album release show on March 12th, half a block away from where they recordedFrom Liberty Street, Sam and Clay awoke the next day to the news that the world was shutting down — effective immediately.  They had just played the first and only show of their tour, and they hadn’t even left their neighborhood.

With all travel and future plans scuttled, they hunkered down with their close friend and record producer Dan Horne (Beachwood Sparks, Cass McCombs, Allah-Las), and started making music. What seemed to come naturally in this unknowable situation was Mapache’s connection to songs they loved by other artists and the act of reinterpreting them in stripped-down, often vulnerable ways.

Whether it’s a blissed-out, patiently unfolding spin on Sade’s romantic salve “All About Our Love,” a tender take on the Louvin Brothers’ “On My Way To The Show,” or a searching, sublime version of Allah-Las “Worship The Sun,” throughout 3 Mapache prove themselves masters of reinterpretation. These are deeply loved songs from both classic acts and musical contemporaries, all of which Mapache performs with emotional conviction and impeccable style.

Mapache’s 2020 album From Liberty Street — also recorded with Dan Horne — was described by Aquarium Drunkard as “a warm, pacific-breezed collection of country rock, western twang, Mexican boleros, and a touch of that Gram Parsons cosmic Americana fairy dust.” The group’s self-titled debut was cut live and raw around a single microphone and helped the Mapache earn festival appearances at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass and Pickathon, where Rolling Stone named their set one of the weekend's top highlights.

Praise For Mapache and From Liberty Street

“If the Everly Brothers cruised back from a high desert road trip and landed at County Line beach and cracked a beer to watch the sunset – you’d have these guys...Mapache’s chemistry is undeniable and their creative circle seems to be flourishing.”

— KCRW

“Quintessentially laid-back. This is Sunday morning music, best experienced within walking distance of Big Sur or Joshua Tree.”

— UNCUT

“Medicine for the soul.”

 Shindig

“Angelic harmonies weaving somewhere between traditional folk and modern cosmic country music. These songs are inspired by everything from Mexican boleros, to Bakersfield twang, to lonesome cowboy campfire tunes.”

 FLOOD

"Cosmic California Country."

 THE CURRENT

"The West Coast Pop Americana brainchild of Clay Finch and Sam Blasucci, have merged their influences of folk, psychedelic, cowboy, and Latin rhythm to invent their unique blend of heartfelt soundscapes."

 FLAUNT

"Mapache presents its songs with earnestness and compassion. And in these times, when social distancing is a necessity and life with a pandemic becomes the new normal, we could all use a little more warmth, earnestness, and compassion in our lives.”

 No Depression

“Preternatural harmonies...Their music smolders rather than blazes, but that’s the point.”

— Buzzbands.la

"From Liberty Street pulls the listener in and demands attention.”

 The Aquarian

"There are tales of hammock swung afternoons that feel flush with melodies traded back and forth like pot-luck parcels. Seems like if you’re looking for a bit of relief right about now, this is a damn sure bet.”
