Maxwell teases NIGHT with new song "Shame"
Currently on his "50 Intimate Nights Live" TourCertified Classics Re-Releases 'Embrya' in Celebration of its 20th Anniversary
(New York, NY): Today, Maxwell debuts "Shame," pairing his signature falsetto with sultry synths and soft, echoing drum taps. Written and produced by Musze (Maxwell's pen name) and long time collaborator, Hod David, "Shame" is a classic Maxwell love story about a complicated relationship. The new song is the debut single off upcoming album 'NIGHT,' concluding his ‘BLACKSUMMERS'NIGHT' trilogy, slated for release in 2019 on Columbia Records. A visual for the track, directed by JAY-Z collaborators Gerard Bush and Christopher Renz (Bush + Renz), will follow.

""Shame” is a modern love song. Not just romantic love, but love for self and others, Maxwell explains. "Social media has created an alternate world where people watch everything you do, including your failures. They even often feel a sense of joy in your pain. This creates a barrier to real intimacy because we’re preoccupied with appearances; with measuring up to what society thinks we should be, how we should look, what we should have and what we should aspire to," he continues. "The song is about removing that mask of expectation and letting go of the shame of being real and vulnerable. The shadow of shame can only be broken when we unveil ourselves, and recognize that we that we are all human - flawed yet perfect, broken yet stronger with each obstacle."
Maxwell’s ambitious ‘BLACKSUMMERS'NIGHT' trilogy began with ‘BLACK’ in 2009 complete with his sultry smash “Pretty Wings.” The second installment, ‘SUMMERS,’ released in 2016 and named Pitchfork’s Best New Music, featured the 2017 Best R&B Song GRAMMY winner “Lake by the Ocean.” The two albums have earned Maxwell seven GRAMMY nominations and three wins, spanning 10 years.
Maxwell recently embarked on his "50 Intimate Nights Live" tour, a 50-day-trek to North America's top theaters. Lauded for his "silky charisma" (Rolling Stone), his impeccable vocals, and the sheer physicality of his performance, the soul singer is accompanied by a six-piece band complete with keyboardists, guitarists and back-up vocalists.
Following on the heels of performances at North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam, Afropunk Paris, and the 50th annual U.S. Open Opening Night Ceremony, Maxwell will debut long awaited new material alongside his many critically acclaimed hits. On his last tour, Billboard said “no one can bend and flex his lithe physique like Maxwell (or his supple tenor/falsetto, for that matter)...his cool, sexy moves set off new waves of screams each time."
