Mia Dyson Finds Her New Lease On Life In A Near-Death Experience On “Dragging Me Down”

Australian singer-songwriter Mia Dyson has shared her new single “Dragging Me Down” - a poetic and soul-infused track off her forthcoming album ‘Tender Heart’ (Feb 23). A softer twist on her recognizable rock-blues sound, “Dragging Me Down” openly traces Dyson’s struggle with anxiety in the aftermath of a near-death experience, caused by an unexpected heart arrhythmia - and directly following an earthquake that struck her Los Angeles home. With candid, deeply-felt lyrics that depict Dyson’s internal battle to stay afloat amidst the darkness, the track shows the true breadth of what makes Mia Dyson such a distinctive musician and songwriter. Dyson is able to utilize gentle writing to tackle these large and often-overwhelming topics; creating pathways and shifting one’s mindset to cultivate inner peace.

Dyson says on the track “I have encountered depression throughout my life and it’s easy to add to the distress by blaming myself for not feeling good. It’s baffling to be in a battle with one’s self. Surely I can pull myself out of it?! But it’s not in my control and, somehow, acceptance of this fact is the path through…While I often wish I could blame outside forces for my troubles (and indeed often do), I’ve found that my peace is an inside job. That knowledge is both a relief and a challenge.”

The origins of the record can be traced back to that harrowing night three years ago, when Dyson remembers being somewhere else entirely - a place of “darkness and nothingness.” An earthquake caused Dyson to experience an undiagnosed arrhythmia, prompting her to suddenly and unexpectedly stop breathing. Dyson was rushed to the hospital by her husband, where she had a defibrillator implanted and was left to contemplate such a close call. What she delivers is a life-affirming, grippingly honest and unapologetically joyful rumination on all she almost lost the night she nearly lost her life. 

Above all, ‘Tender Heart' is a celebration of renewed life in the wake of near-death - created with nuance and intimacy by a renowned craftsperson. Dyson is an ARIA winner in her native Australia, voted one of the country's "Best Guitar Players Ever,” and has opened for Bonnie Raitt and Stevie Nicks. She has earned praise from P!NK (Dyson “blew my mind apart”), NPR Music’s Best Of The Year lists and received a four star review in Rolling Stone.
