Michaela Anne Celebrates The Mother-Daughter Bond And The Power Of Music In Partnership With The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame

New Album Oh To Be That Free Is Out June 10; Bonnaroo, Mountain Stage + Tour Dates With Parker Millsap To Follow

Michaela Anne’s first Mother’s Day with a child looked a bit different than she had ever imagined. Last year, the Nashville singer-songwriter was five-months pregnant and working on her new album when she received a call that her mother suffered a debilitating hemorrhagic stroke. She spent the entire second half of her pregnancy at her mom’s hospital bedside in Michigan. She could only remember the lyrics to one song, Carole King’s “Child of Mine,” so she sang it over and over again to remind her mom how much she needed her and how much she had to return to. Although her mom wasn’t able to be there when her granddaughter was born, she continues to make progress in her recovery. Michaela has watched her mom slowly regain strength as she re-learns to walk and talk in a journey that sometimes feels chillingly similar to what her 11-month-old daughter is experiencing. Despite a life-altering year, Michaela is thankful for her family and the music that’s strengthened the mother-daughter bond across generations, especially Carole King’s 1970 lullaby “Child of Mine.” In honor of her first Mother’s Day, Michaela Anne partnered with the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame to share a personal essay on the power of music: https://www.rockhall.com/events/mothers-day

Over the weekend, Michaela sat down with Emily Fox for KEXP Sound & Vision to talk about the heartbreaking yet “surreal, magical” parallels between her mother’s recovery and daughter’s development (listen here). Michaela also joined Rhett Miller on the latest episode of Wheels Off for an in-depth discussion on new motherhood, her record coming out next month, and her “refusal to be satisfied” (listen here).

Oh To Be That Free is set for release on June 10th, 2022 via Yep Roc. The album has received early praise from The Boot, BrooklynVegan, No Depression, Wide Open Country, American Songwriter, WMOT, Holler, the Americana Music Association, and more. Today AllMusic highlighted Michaela’s latest single “Does It Ever Break Your Heart.” Check out the interview and watch the meditative official music video here: https://www.allmusic.com/blog/post/michaela-anne-interview
