Today, Bay Area collective Moonalice releases their much anticipated studio EP, ‘Full Moonalice Vol. 1’, on the high holy day of April 20 via Nettwerk. Mixed and co-produced by 4x-Grammy Award-winning engineer Dave Way(Fiona Apple, Pink, Norah Jones), the project delivers vibrant cuts of the psychedelic soul that infuses Moonalice’s joyful live shows. Included on the EP are three previously released singles, “Let’s Get Funky,” “People Get Ready,” and “Woo Woo.” In addition, the EP includes an extended version of “Time Has Come Today,” as well as two other singles. Arriving with the EP is the music video for “Turn on Your Lovelight,” Moonalice’s ripping reinterpretation of the Bobby “Blue” Bland classic. It showcases a gospel-style arrangement from Barry Sless and immaculate vocals from Dylan Chambers and the T Sisters.

Along with Barry Sless (lead guitar and pedal steel) and Pete Sears (bass), Roger McNamee (guitar) formed Moonalice and recorded their 2007 T Bone Burnett-produced self-titled debut album. The band later expanded to include John Molo (drums), Jason Crosby (keyboards), and, in 2019, Lester Chambers (vocals, harmonica) and his son Dylan Chambers (vocals), along with Erika, Rachel, and Chloe Tietjen of acclaimed Americana band the T Sisters on vocals. The current iteration builds off the soulful psychedelic legacy that Lester Chambers established in the 1960s through his groundbreaking band The Chambers Brothers, who were featured in Questlove's Oscar-winning documentary Summer of Soul. On ‘Full Moonalice Vol. 1,’ Moonalice brings positivity and hope to the forefront, using their voices and the power of music to convey uplifting messages to audiences.
“An important part of Moonalice is the notion that each of us has an opportunity to make a difference,” McNamee says. “We’ve survived a pandemic and a zillion other things. It makes sense to look forward and think about the positive, and remind people that they have a shot at a better day ahead.”
4/20 is always a special time for Moonalice. They played their first concert at a medical marijuana benefit in 2007 and have campaigned for the legalization of cannabis ever since. Their popular tune “It’s 4:20 Somewhere” has over 4.6 million downloads and was certified by the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall Of Fame as the highest number ever downloaded directly from a band’s own website. This year Moonalice celebrates 4/20 with their new EP and a hometown headline show at San Francisco’s Great American Music Hall on Friday, April 22. The party continues on Saturday, April 23 with the celebration of Lester’s 82nd birthday at Auburn’s Odd Fellows Hall.
Fans across the country can catch Moonalice at BottleRock Napa Valley this May, throughout the pacific northwest this spring, and across the midwest and east coast this fall, with more tour dates to be announced soon.
