Read a feature on 'Nixon's The One' by TV critic Mike Hale in today's New York Times here.
Born and raised in rural southern California, Richard Nixon was always suspicious of the northeastern, Ivy League-educated elites he described as "corrupt, decadent and wrong." In "Elites," Nixon complains about the radicalism of Ivy League presidents to former Harvard professor Henry Kissinger and compares the American upper class to the "incestuous, homosexual" French upper class.
For 'Nixon's The One,' Shearer, alongside Watergate historian Stanley Kutler, combed through thousands of hours of Nixon's secret White House tapes. These re-enactments are pulled verbatim from the tapes, giving untold insight into the awkwardly intimate machinations of the Nixon Administration. "It's like you're in the Oval Office with him," says Shearer, "And you can't get out."
