Spanning cassettes, DATs, ADATs, and analog tapes, the collection opens a rare window into the formative years of one of the most distinctive artists of her generation, bringing together early song sketches, bedroom recordings, rehearsals, live performances, and intimate demos that document Paula Cole finding her voice, honing her craft, and becoming the artist the world would soon come to know.
Sonic Memoir: Demos 1989-1998 arrives during the 30th anniversary year of This Fire, Paula’s groundbreaking 1996 album that transformed her career and established her as a singular force as both a songwriter and producer. The album earned Cole the GRAMMY Award for Best New Artist, alongside nominations for Album of the Year and Producer of the Year (Non-Classical), making her the first woman to receive a solo nomination in the category. The origins of Sonic Memoir are deeply personal. Following the death of Paula’s longtime friend and collaborator Mark Hutchins, she began digging through boxes of recordings the two had made together over the years. As she worked to digitize that material for Hutchins’ family, Paula found herself confronting an even larger archive: her own past. She listened back to hundreds of recordings, live performances, bedroom demos, rehearsals, experiments, false starts, and songs captured in the spaces where they first came to life.
What began as an effort to preserve Hutchins’ work became an unexpected excavation of Paula’s own history. From hundreds of recordings, she ultimately selected 63 tracks, creating a sonic portrait of her younger self and the world she inhabited as she was learning how to write, record, produce, and trust her own artistic instincts.
