Pert Near Sandstone’s forthcoming album ‘Discovery Of Honey,’ out November 4, finds the distinguished bluegrass and folk collective coming full circle after a decade at the forefront of the American roots music scene. They’ve reunited with founding member Ryan Young, who spent much of the past decade performing with Trampled By Turtles, to mix and co-produce this new album, and cut it while gathered around a microphone in a basement studio similar to how they made their debut. Pert Near Sandstone burst forth with a flurry of fiddling, picking and stomping on ‘Discovery Of Honey,’ a 12-track album featuring all original music, with lyrics written by four members of the band.

Pert Near Sandstone is mandolin/fiddler Nate Sipe, banjoist and lead vocalist Kevin Kniebel, guitarist J Lenz, bassist Justin Bruhn and clog & fiddler Matt Cartier. The band gathered at founding member Ryan Young’s new home in an end-of-days bunker with 2-foot thick concrete walls built in the basement by the previous owner. They cut the majority of the album there in just two days.

Songs like “Rattlesnake,” “Hard Times Pass Me By,” and “Getaway” illustrate Pert Near Sandstone at their most fierce; breakneck tempos and a deluge of picked and bowed strings. Lead single “Bloom Again” shows the band’s deft folk songwriting sensibilities, a pensive number with a stomping mid-tempo rhythm. “Enough Said” flirts with traditional Irish folk song, while “Biting My Nails” closes the album with an anthemic slow-burner.

Pert Near Sandstone has performed on Prairie Home Companion, at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, and shared stages with Steve Martin, Ralph Stanley, Del McCoury, and Yonder Mountain String Band. They also host their very own music festival, Blue Ox, which has featured performances by Bela Fleck, Shovels And Rope, Preservation Hall Jazz Band and many others.
