The Gloves Are Off In Pom Pom Squad’s Thrilling Single “Street Fighter” (Out Today)
Previews Forthcoming LP Mirror Starts Moving Without Me (Oct 25)Listen HERE
September 12 - Today, beloved indie rock innovators Pom Pom Squad release “Street Fighter”, the latest in a run of exhilarating singles that preview the band’s highly-anticipated LP Mirror Starts Moving Without Me (Oct 25/City Slang), their first new music in 3 years. Anchored by a 90s-sounding synth patch discovered by accident in the studio by vocalist/songwriter Mia Berrin and co-producer Cody Fitzgerald, “Street Fighter” charges ahead at full throttle with Berrin firing off threats with reckless abandon: “Huh? What? You’re scared of me? / Maybe you should be then / You’re not prepared for me”. Like a prize fighter about to enter the ring, Berrin verbally squares up her adversary on top of a pulsing track that explodes with trademark distorted energy during a shout-along chorus. Firmly tongue-in-cheek with a hint of winking malice, “Street Fighter” serves as yet another brilliant preview of what is surely one of 2024’s great rock records. Stream “Street Fighter” HERE Speaking about the track, Mia Berrin noted: “When Cody and I were messing around with this one we came across a synth patch that sounded like something straight out of Street Fighter! Reconnecting with core-self / inner child is a throughline of the album and guided a lot of the writing process – Street Fighter II was one of my favorite games as a kid, so it felt like a fun direction to take the song in. I finished the lyrics and vocals on the same night at like 4am – I was delirious from being exhausted which resulted in some silly, goofy, lyrics. In general, my writing leans a bit more moody and serious so it’s a different side of me for sure!” “Street Fighter” is accompanied by a lyric video that visually pays tribute to the classic Street Fighter games of the late 80s and 90s. In it, Berrin bounces back and forth in the proper “choose your fighter” stance while the track’s biting lyrics flash across the screen. Check out the “Street Fighter” lyric video HERE
“Street Fighter” is preceded by advanced singles “Downhill” and “Spinning”. The band’s first new release since 2021, “Downhill” was praised as “a grunge-y summer stunner” by Rolling Stone, and "a sleek and catchy song about uncertainty and panic" by Stereogum, while the New York Times noted it “balances between regrets and the perverse pleasures of self-destruction”.
