Red Hot + Blue Available as Exclusive Record Store Day Reissue This Weekend, Following the Trailblazing HIV/AIDS Benefit Album's 30th Anniversary

This weekend, the Red Hot organization celebrates the reissue of two change-making, charitable compilation albums that have furthered the fight against HIV/AIDS for the past three decades: Red Hot + Blue (1990) and Onda Sonora: Red Hot + Lisbon (1998). As the non-profit's inaugural release, Red Hot + Blue delivered the mainstream's "first sensible, shame-free pop culture response to HIV/AIDS" (Esquire), uniting David Byrne, Neneh Cherry, Erasure, Jean Paul Gaultier, Keith Haring, Debbie Harry & Iggy Pop, Jim Jarmusch, Annie Lennox, k.d. lang, U2 and many more in a sweeping tribute to Cole Porter, and a wave of cultural activism that reduced stigmas and altered behavior like the public had never experienced. Red Hot + Blue sold more than a million copies and just commemorated its 30th Anniversary in 2020, but the physical LP has long been out of print. This Saturday, June 12th, the double album will be available exclusively for Record Store Day 2021, repressed on limited edition red and blue colored vinyl.

Pick up a copy at participating independent record stores, and find more information on Red Hot + Blue's RSD Drops reissue here.

Across the 20 compilations released since Red Hot + Blue, Red Hot has collaborated with over 500 artists and raised more than $15 million for humanitarian groups around the world. Today, Red Hot makes one of its most diverse and distinguished titles available on streaming platforms, Onda Sonora: Red Hot + Lisbon. Honoring the music of Portugal and the Portuguese-speaking diaspora of Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde and beyond, "the idea of world music has hardly ever been better served than on Onda Sonora" (New York Times). The 1998 album opens with "Dreamworld: Marco de Canaveses," an original song by David Byrne and Caetano Veloso, and traverses styles from a multitude of countries with contributions from over 30 artists.

Developed by GRAMMY-winning producer Andres Levin and artistic director Béco Dranoff, and recorded primarily in Lisbon, New York and Salvador, Bahia, Onda Sonora: Red Hot + Lisbon was launched to coincide with the opening of Expo '98, Lisbon's 1998 world fair. Across 23 tracks, the project features leading artists from the Lusophone World, such as Bonga, Carlinhos Brown, Djavan, Marisa Monte, Netos do N'Gumbé, master Portuguese guitarist António Chainho and many more. The project also includes international stars like k.d. lang, who performs the Portuguese classic "Fado Hilário," plus David Byrne in his first-ever collaboration with Brazilian superstar Caetano Veloso, Arto Lindsay, Smoke City and The Durutti Column, among others.
