Today, Sarah Shook & the Disarmers release new single "Motherfucker," delivering a searing send-off to an ex-lover that made life a living hell. As the latest preview of their forthcoming album Revelations, out March 29th via Abeyance Records/Thirty Tigers, the song further showcases their salient strain of punk-rock truth telling and outlaw country twang, helmed by bandleader River Shook’s “expertise in crafting narratives chalked full of sharp observation and potent emotion," as Paste recently praised. “Revelations is set to be the band’s most intimate and piercing album yet.” Combining a cathartic, rallying cry of a chorus with incisive observations and a deep understanding of the human experience, River Shook says that “Motherfucker” is an “anthem for anyone who's ever had to deal with that special someone who constantly creates drama out of thin air, drives you up the wall, and is generally a no-good, lyin', thievin' motherfucker.”
Listen to "Motherfucker" and watch the lyric video:
Self-produced for the first time by River Shook (they/them), Revelations is a collection of 10 lived-in songs and salt-of-the-earth stories, channeling the commanding energy and ferocious spirit of their live shows into pointed reflections about navigating class consciousness, grappling with mental health under the confines of capitalism, denouncing patriarchs, fighting for queer love, coming to terms with issues of substance abuse and unhealthy relationships, and finding beauty at the end of the world. Driven and defined by Shook’s honesty, unwavering integrity and endless journey of growth and self-discovery, Revelations feels fully themselves: raw and unfiltered, raucous and resilient, blunt and biting, but also full of compassion and empathy.
“Motherfucker” arrives on the heels of title track and music video "Revelations," which The New York Times named one of the most notable songs of the week. “River Shook matter-of-factly describes mental health turmoil,” wrote Jon Pareles. "A minor-key roots-rocker laced with twangy guitar and steel-guitar lines…there's no happy ending, just perseverance and a steadfast beat." The track is currently climbing the Americana radio charts, and follows lead single "Backsliders," dubbed a Song You Need to Know by Rolling Stone, and hailed for its "musical prowess and infectious melodies” (No Depression).
While River Shook is based in Chapel Hill, NC, they live hundreds of dates a year on the road, making them a master observer of the ways in which people are getting by, keeping on and going through many of the same things together. Sarah Shook & the Disarmers will perform the music of Revelations all around the country this spring and summer, on a 2024 tour including 30 dates and counting.
