August 23 - Say She She — the New York trio comprised of Piya Malik (staple El Michels Affair feature, and former backing singer for Chicano Batman), Sabrina Mileo Cunningham and Nya Gazelle Brown — have released "Prism," the lead single and title track of the group’s forthcoming debut album on Karma Chief Records (a division of Colemine) out October 7. Named as a silent nod to Nile Rodgers (C’est chi-chi!: It's Chic!”), Say She She has quickly broken out as a band to watch in 2022, their show-stopping three-part harmonies and throw down on the dance floor attitude earning significant attention from KCRW, the BBC, Gilles Peterson’s WorldWide FM, a key placement in the trailer for Lena Dunham's upcoming movie Sharp Stick and much more.
New single “Prism” showcases a buttery smooth version of Say She She’s "post-disco spirit of early 80s NYC” (The Guardian) and nods to Lover’s Rock, melding lush harmonies and the swinging energy of Donna Summer and The Supremes to capture a mind opening psychedelic experience. The music video — shot by film producer and NYC native Nathan Corbin aka Blazer (DJ Khaled, Michael Cera, ESPN, more) and directed by Alyssa Boni (Ridley Scott Agency) in upstate New York — features Say She She delighting in a sunny and psychedelic trip through blooming summer pastures and Bollywood-inspired dance moves, the music as the medicine.

With three strong voices at the epicenter of a roaring roster of musicians that includes former members of The Dap-Kings, The Extraordinaires, the house band at Ronnie Scott’s, The Shacks, Twin Shadow, Chicano Batmanand members of underground cult-funk band Orgone, Say She She is injecting funk and pop with a heavy dose of dance and disco beats and a wide range of inspirations: Indian legend Asha Puthli, David Macuso’s loft parties, Turkish funk, Rotary Club, Stax soul groups and more, carving their own corner and coining their own crate of Discodelic Soul.
Say She She got started in a classic New York tale of friends found through following the sounds…from the downtown dancefloors…through the Lower East Side rafters and up to the rooftops of Harlem.
Piya and Sabrina lived directly above and below each other and would hear each other singing through the floorboards of their Lower East Side apartment building. They knew they had to meet and after a few impromptu late night writing sessions decided it was time to form a band. Piya’s close friend and collaborator Nya joined forces with them a few years later and the songs, melodies and harmonies started flowing from this triumvirate of singers that honed their craft in choral choirs and girl groups from childhood to post punk funk improv and bone rattling free jazz psychedelia.
Prism is bursting with musical delights at every turn: the tightest of grooves, vintage synths, flute and strings color these eight new songs, with highlights including the slinky bounce of “Fortune Teller” (“I’m not a fortune teller, I can’t read your mind”), and “Believe,” a heady slice of psych rock.
Say She She has been steadily releasing stand-alone non-album singles since February, with “Forget Me Not,” a gritty funk send-up inspired by NYC’s Guerilla Girls. “Trouble” recently hit #7 on KCRW’s Top 30, and “Norma,”was just released, their protest anthem written in response to the decision to overturn Roe v Wade. They just performed a set of shows with Chicano Batman, have select fall dates and will announce more soon.
